ABC Watches

This is a thread for serious hikers/outdoor people both men and women. Do you own and use an ABC watch when out on the trail?

For the non initiated, what is an ABC watch: Well before the advent of smartphones, GPS trackers and smart watches, there existed watches that provided the wearer with an Altimeter, a Barometer and a Compass, these watches were known as triple sensor watches or ABC for short.

Initially only worn by pilots, sailors and the military, these watches became popular with outdoor enthusiasts in 1994 when British survivalist expert Ray Mears wore a Casio Protrek ABC watch during the filming of his series on Bushcraft and surviving in the wild with just a machete.

Since then this type of watch has been worn by the adventurous both on and off the scree, from Denzel Washington in Man on Fire to US Navy Seals deploying on rescue missions, in fact the Casio G-Shock Range-Master is so good a watch it is worn by US Navy Seals and Japan Ground Self Defence Force [Special Operation Group].

So, how many members on PDF have or use a ABC watch and if so, show off your timepiece.

I think you are confusing "trekking" with "hiking":

A trek is normally 3 or more days in locations you are NOT familiar with, you challenge yourself. It is like saying, why do you need hiking boots when you can just wear sandals!

You talk about hiking boots and sandals reminded me of a tragic but amusing story..

Only the new ones are expensive, the older ones from 1990's and early 2000's are affordable. I mean if you compare them to Garmin and Sunnto, they are cheaper and offer everything apart from GPS.

Few days back I check the latest version probably as per seller and it is around 135000 PKR....
I have some old stuff but different brands but later on I lost inetrest.

Bara Market in Rawalpindi has a few watch dealers hidden away inside that have older ProTrek pathfinders between 25,000 and 30,000. The best place to pick up a reasonably priced on is Nizam Watch house or Tyme & Co, both are good dealers but you just need to keep an eye out.

To be honest, the older models like mine are not that expensive if you can find an honest dealer.

Yea, unfortunately mine has run the gauntlet and the titanium is not scratch resistant. it has serious wear and tear but it keeps ticking because of the solar charging.
