Estonia's rare earth break China's market grip
Estonia's rare earth break China's market grip

High-tech firms across the globe have been hit hard by China's slashing of rare earth metals exports but it is turning out to be good news for Estonia's small Silmet factory.

China should just stop exporting rare earth and when Estonia's supply run out then the world will come back to beg China.

U know even india has Rare earth materials,But india won't export it...
China is exportig and making money now..If china stops exporting to japan, then japan will get it from india..

China wants to reduce exports for developing its own electronics and semi conductor industry. When Indians and Estonians can grow smart to same level they can think about restricting exports as well. Its simple trade and business nothing political.

If it's going to take years to ramp up production in the US which previously had facilities and actual deposites. How long would it take to build India's facilities??? Delusional me too'ers...

@ the news, China's rare earth is not a bludgeon to use against other nations. China ramped down production because it had to cut down on smuggling and because it could not control the price of rare earth despite producing 90+% of the world supply (crazy if you ask me)

Let other nations produce rare earth, their cost would be many time that of China, so they have to sell at higher prices to avoid loss.

China can then sell at their (Estonian) prices instead of current low prices. Exporting rare earth is not benefiting China because the cost of cleaning up the heavily polluted envirnonment is going to cost probably hundreds of millions.

Our experience in Malaysia where there was a small rare earth refining plant showed that the pollution caused cancers to residence, new born infants and domestic animals in the area. It was operated by Japanese company, and eventually due to pressure from Malaysian and Japanese environmental groups, it was closed down.

The problem with rare earth materials is not the deposits available but extracting it and the pollution it causes. US, Australia and Brazil have huge deposits too. I read that California is planning to start producing it in wake of China's export restrictions. But I doubt their cost effectiveness.

The rare earth industry in Zhongguo is less than USD10 billion. A single oil deal Zhongguo does can be something bigger than that. Perspective and context, rare earth is not about the money over here.

The total money on Rare Earth export each year is only worth $1 Billion and yet China is paying an EXTREMELY high price in environment and health cost.

The West force China to sell Rare Earth at a very low price.

That's right.

There is almost no value-added in exporting rare Earth minerals. It's not a profitable business, and it damages the environment as well.

China's rare Earth minerals should be kept for our own manufacturing, rather than exporting it to Japan, and reimporting it in the form of finished products.

Yes.

When China buys natural resources from Overseas, the West pictures China as "stealing other countries raw material" but when China stop Western countries from stealing China's raw material then the West pictures China as controlling world supply of raw material or a monopoly.
