I have this dream of working only 9 months a year--sort of like what school teachers and some college professors do. The way it works is that those 3 months of 'no work' are considered 'furloughs' (or, leave without pay). My current organization allows that so long as the management is okay with that. They, of course, cut your yearly pay but spread the cut over the year so that you still get paid every month--albeit smaller pay.

Yesterday I broached this subject with my supervisor and he, surprisingly, indicated he would be open to the idea. I have been excited since then! So, starting sometime in 2016, I am thinking of going on a nine-month employment. I can't eat the money--I'd rather TRAVEL! And I hate the stinking summer here in the American South and the bitter cold here (it was 19 F/ -7 C in November--only November!--this year already. For a Karachiite, that is cold, buddy!).

So I am thinking of wintering in warmer places like Karachi or Key West or Cancun and summering in places like Vancouver or the mountains of Pakistan. Oh, at least I can dream!

Question: Is anyone doing the 9-month work period? If so, how do they spend the free months? And what would YOU do if you had the option?

I do , 9 to 10 months work , but i am technical consultant and running my own projects with different clients. so i choose when i want to take off
Some times i split the months in between working months and sometime in one go.

well i spend time with my family and friends, enjoy different activities and travelling ...

I would travel....I still do...I work bloody 11 mths a yr and in between take 2 vacations of 2-3 weeks each...

I do , 9 to 10 months work , ...

I see--so there is at least one person here who work less 9-10 months a year.
Running one's own business is the way to go to get this kind of flexibility. Or be lucky enough to find an organization which allows such an option. I don't know if I will be able to live my dream of a 9-month job but if I don't think about it, strive for it then I have no chance. I like my job a lot but nothing beats traveling.

As I read somewhere: "All things considered there are only two kinds of people: Those who stay home or those who travel." The day I decide to stay home and not 'explore' I will be dead for all purposes.
