In an attempt to strengthen its chances of clinching the $20 billion Indian Air Force (IAF) order for 114 combat aircraft, Swedish defence giant Saab has proposed to carry out the manufacture of 96 of its Gripen fighters in India, reports Business Standard.

The order calls for commitment from sellers to provide sensitive technologies and to conduct the majority of the manufacturing in India itself. The IAF had originally sent out a request for information (RFI) in April for the purchase of 114 fighters, most of which were to be manufactured in India through an Indian private entity that would partner with the foreign manufacturer under a technology transfer pact. The IAF is now considering the various responses from vendors, including that of Saab.

“Except the first 18 aircraft, we intend to manufacture everything in India. Saab will look to build an ecosystem of defence manufacturing inside the country,” Chairman and Managing Director of Saab India Ola Rignellsaid stated in an interview.

Saab has partnered with Adani Defence for the prospect of manufacturing the Gripen in India. The company, however, faces stiff competition from competitors like Dassault, Boeing and Lockheed, who have also tied with local partners.

Why is Saab still pitching its products for the MMRCA program when the Rafales for the IAF have already started flight-testing and are soon to be delivered? They don't seriously expect the IAF to renege on the deal, no?

CG and IAF shouldn't even look at it and instead should focus on Tejas MK2. This would only mean that Tejas would meet the same fate as Marut.
And bring in private players in Tejas program. HAL cant cut it boss. They should stick to developing and manufacturing helicopters and licensed manufacturing.

India ordered as many Rafales as they could afford - 36 aircrafts.
Now they are looking to buy something else to fill the squadrons.
If they believed that the Rafale would meet the budget, they would just order more Rafales.
The single engine fighter procurement was drastically changed when Congress acussed Modi of corruption. The extension to invite MiG-35, Rafale and Super Hornets is just political sawdust to avoid more such invitations. They are unlikely to be considered.
This is however the state until the next election. If there is a government change, anything can happen.

There will be a new tender out where all old competitors are back again.

Now they are looking to buy something else to fill the squadrons.

Its True that India has separated Single Engine and Dual Engine Requirements.

A few Corrections :

1. They Didnt Just Purchased Just 36 Rafales , But far More :

French company Snecma (Safran)( a Dassault partner along with Thales) has proposed to invest Euro one billion in the Kaveri Gas Turbine Engine to be fitted in the LCA MK1A. Safran has developed the M88 engine that powers the Rafale as well as the Shakti engine for Indian advanced light helicopters (ALH) ‘Dhruv’.

MBDA will work with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to transfer Thrust Vectoring technologies that are expected to be used in Astra and other missiles putting them at the level of Meteor—making the missiles more lethal.
Under the deal, the French company has agreed to transfer the special spray paint and coating technology which is of immense benefit to Indian programmes, including LCA, AMCA, SU-30 MKI and FGFA.

Also, it is expected that 36 combat machines could get the final layer of the stealth paint here in India as part of Make in India initiative.
The radar technology on Rafale can easily be adapted to other aircrafts in IAF. As part of the deal, the multimode AESA radar technology will be transferred to DRDO for application on UTTAM AESA radar.
The high-end twin engine aircraft with a state-of-the-art electronic scanning radar will certainly add to the IAF’s capabilities. The MBDA’s new-age Meteor Beyond Visual Range missile, can hit targets over 150 km away, without entering the enemy airspace before launching an attack. The aircraft is also capable of firing nuclear missiles.

2. There are CONCRETE Proofs ( from the earlier rafale Discussions ) that If BJP comes to Power, More batches will be ordered.

Getting lots of technology, still does not result in additional Rafales beyond the 36 ordered.

There are concrete proof that the BJP party considers the Rafale aircraft to be much too expensive for large scale deployment in the IAF.

I doubt that there is a single individual that knows what India will end up with doing.

Rafale still do not fit on the elevators of any carrier of India, so what will the Indian Navy do?
Buy more MiG-29s which will fit, but have to be repaired after each landing?

I cannot deny that yes, Rafales are Costly. But then we did purchase a similar no. Of Mirages in 80s when our economy was shit.

Today we can afford them.

IAF was told by the government 1-2 years ago that India cannot afford the Rafale.
I don’t think economy has improved since then.

And unless the carriers are redesigned, the Rafale will not fit.
The removable wingtip idea which will cause a 15 minute delay every time the Rafale is moved on/off the elevator is less than ideal.

Economy was Good , Its Better Now. The Reason The Deal was NOT signed was becuase The Then Govt. was FORCING Dassault to take full gurantee of Jets manufactured by HAL. Which they couldn't.

It was NEVER about Money. It was a Corrupt Govt. Deciding not to sign since Their conditions were not met.

I guess Rafale-M was specifically designed for carriers.. No ?
