Claims of a push in Washington to undermine support for the Saudi-American alliance in favor of a “tilt toward Iran”

A document from the 9/11 Commission Report. Two former officials who led the official investigation into the events of the 9/11 attacks said that Saudi Arabia was not involved in the attacks as is claimed
American political commentators and former government officials have accused the Obama Administration of a thinly veiled attempt to manipulate the American public discussion, at a time of growing disenchantment with the Iranian nuclear deal, by training the media’s attention on an alleged Saudi government operational role in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Edward A. Turzanski, a prominent former intelligence officer and present co-chair of the Center for the Study of Terrorism at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, told Asharq Al-Awsat “The Administration has exhibited a pattern of conduct in which it will use whatever lever it can in order to bolster relations with Iran. … There’s a broader context to show that the Administration suppresses certain pieces of information at certain times in order to build political capital for whatever purpose it has, and promulgates other pieces of information at other times to advance the same purpose. And there may be a predisposition in certain quarters of the media, first of all, not to be critical of this president; and second, to protect him in those cases where a significant policy initiative of his is at risk.”

Claims along these lines were most recently sparked on April 10, when Democratic Senator Bob Graham — a supporter of the Iran nuclear deal who also played a major role in the first U.S. Government investigation into 9/11 after the perpetration of the attacks — appeared on the national television news program 60 Minutes. Graham revived discussions of the infamous “28 pages,” a still-classified portion of a report by a congressional panel investigating intelligence failures related to the 9/11 attacks. Graham suggested in the course of the interview, as have other public officials and media figures before and since, that the pages contain evidence of an operational link between the Government of Saudi Arabia and the most devastating terrorist attack ever perpetrated on American soil.

In a political culture generally skeptical of “conspiracy theories,” Lee Smith, a columnist at the right-leaning Weekly Standard, described the program as part of a broader information campaign to “make the Saudis look bad.” He assessed the effort as aiming to build support for President Obama’s policies of recalibrating traditional American alliances in the Middle East in favor of a new partnership with Iran.

Also in April, a landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a judgment of $2 billion on behalf of victims of Iranian-sponsored terrorism, including the 1983 Marine Corps Barracks bombing in Lebanon, which killed 241 American servicemen. According to the ruling, the plaintiffs in the case are entitled to collect the monies from Iranian Central Bank funds that were frozen by the United States. Public attention to the ruling was modest, however, compared to a renewed focus on legislation in Congress — called the “Justice Against Supporters of Terrorism Act” — which would make it considerably easier for the families of victims of the 9/11 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia for damages in American courts.

On April 22, a significant statement was issued by two respected former leaders of the “9/11 Commission:” former Governor Tom Kean and former Representative Lee Hamilton. The statement seeks to dispel what it describes as misconceptions which had arisen in recent weeks as a result of the intense media discussion about the “28 pages.” Among other points, it reiterates that the 9/11 Commission found “no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded” Al-Qaeda, insisting that nothing in the 28-page document, should it be released, would prove otherwise.

Hamilton and Kean noted in their statement that the voluminous 9/11 Commission Report dwells extensively on Saudi Arabia, home to most of the 9/11 hijackers. But they also acknowledge that the Kingdom itself has become a prime target of the jihadist groups; that “Saudi Arabia has been an ally of the United States in combatting terrorism;” and that “many Saudi public servants have died in their battles with Al-Qaeda operatives.”

.
A Saudi regime mouthpiece media reporting that Saudis were not involved in 9/11 or terrorism. Seems totally legit.

.
The congressional inquiry into 9/11 already cleared KSA days ago. The unfounded nonsense rumors were always bogus and no proofs whatsoever have ever been put forward. 15 years (!) has passed and the status quo is the exact same. Nothing. KSA has always publicly stated from day 1 that those 28 pages should be declassified as there is nothing to hide.

I guess that the current CIA chief is a "Saudi Arabian mouthpiece" as well?

CIA Director John Brennan on NBC's "Meet The Press."

Arab News | Published — Sunday 1 May 2016

WASHINGTON/JEDDAH: The US congressional inquiry into 9/11 has cleared Saudi Arabia of suspicions about possible links with the Al-Qaeda, the CIA chief said on Monday.
CIA Director John Brennan made this revelation in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press”, during which he talked about the 9/11 Commission’s inquiry.

He said a 28-page secret chapter of the commission’s report contained preliminary information about possible Saudi links to the attackers, but these were “uncorroborated and unvetted.”
Brennan said the Commission made “a very clear judgment” that there was no evidence indicating “the Saudi government as an institution or Saudi officials individually” financially backed Al-Qaeda.
To point to Saudi involvement would be “very, very inaccurate,” he said.
Brennan said the relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia remains “very strong.”

Brennan spoke on the 5th anniversary of the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in a US commando operation in Pakistan.
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir had earlier debunked allegations that Saudi Arabia supports extremist groups, saying the Kingdom had in fact been targeted by terrorists for several years, including a wave of bombings by the Al-Qaeda in 2003. In Riyadh alone, simultaneous suicide bombings at three residential compounds killed more than 30 people, including Saudis, Lebanese, Americans, British and Australians.
Saudi Arabia was also targeted by terrorists throughout 2015, with Daesh attacking four mosques in Dammam, Qatif, Abha and Najran, killing 38 and wounding 148.
In August 2015, authorities arrested 421 suspects from four different terror cells related to these crimes, he said.

Anyway the funny thing here is that those who want KSA to be sued, just because 15 private Saudi Arabian citizens took part (most of whom were of Yemeni origins just like OBL who was half Yemeni and half Syrian) with no ties to KSA's government, alongside hundreds of other Al-Qaeda planers from across the world (different nationalities and ethnicities), I guess that half of the world (almost) could sue the US for committing 100's (if not 1000's) of crimes the scale of 9/11 where "only" 3000 people died.

Anyway the few US politicians who wanted to sue KSA failed tremendously and they will never achieve their goals in this regard. This news is frankly tiring and apparently certain Americans want to use the 9/11 until the end of times the same way that Israel and certain Jews use Holocaust as an excuse for everything that they do.

Since 9/11 500.000 Saudi Arabian students have studied at US universities (probably many times more have visited the country as tourists) and no terrorist attacks have since been committed by any Saudi Arabian citizen in the US let alone the West. Nor obviously prior to 9/11. Saudi Arabians have been going to the US for studies and other fields since the 1960's. So we are talking about 15 individuals out of millions upon millions of people.

The only difference being that those 15 (19 in total) were able to successfully harm the US (most powerful country by far) more than any other country, group etc. has been able to do since WW2 ended. Including certain countries (the two allies Iran and North Korea) who have barked against the US for decades. Among others. Quite telling in fact.

U.S officials also said Iraq has WMDs. I don't think it takes a genius to know that U.S has proved to be a great liar when it suits its interest. Why should they close their eyes on the money-pot Saudis while they can milk them greatly?

U.S also was telling us it is fighting Al-Qaeda, but in Syria today, we see they are helping practically most groups aligned with Al-Qaeda. U.S is a hypocrite and no one doubts that.

So what you are trying to say here is that the KSA government was behind 9/11? What would KSA, a US ally - even more so back in 2001, gain from doing such a thing? Every sane person can see that there would be nothing to gain but everything to lose. In fact the Mullah's of Iran benefited greatly from what followed in the aftermath of 9/11 given what occurred in neighboring Afghanistan and Iraq.

Speaking about Al-Qaeda, do you know that several members involved with 9/11 and the organization itself have lived in Iran and had ties to the Mullah's?

Do you know that KSA owns assets worth an estimated 1-2 TRILLION US dollars in the US? That KSA (government and private individuals) have stakes in countless of American companies and crucial industries etc.? The list is endless. US is not milking anyone. The trade balance has in fact been in favor of KSA for DECADES. Not even Saudi Arabian purchases of US military hardware (which is by far the best on the market) has changed that.

So who is milking who exactly? It's in fact the other way around.

Anyway I don't care what people choose to believe in. Most people are highly ignorant and dumb and that has always been the case throughout history. The facts that I wrote in post 2 speak for themselves.
