Seven men were convicted on Monday of sexually abusing vulnerable teenagers in a prosecution sparked by revelations of sexual exploitation stretching back years in a northern England town.

A 2014 report said that more than 1,400 young people were victims of sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

In a pattern repeated in several other UK towns and cities, the perpetrators were mostly men of Pakistani heritage, who befriended teenage girls and plied them with gifts, alcohol and drugs before abusing them.

Prosecutor Michelle Colborne said the victims, now in their 30s, were “targeted, sexualised and, in some instances, subjected to acts of a degrading and violent nature at the hands of these men who sit in the dock”.

“None of them had the maturity to understand that they were being groomed and exploited,” she said.

A jury at Sheffield Crown Court convicted the seven defendants of charges including rape and indecent assault. They will be sentenced on November 16. An eighth defendant was acquitted.

The cases in Rotherham, Huddersfield, Rochdale and other towns in which most of the victims were white have heightened ethnic tensions in Britain. They also have spurred criticism of local authorities, who failed to protect vulnerable girls, and of police, who often didn't listen to victims they regarded as troublesome teenagers.

Far-right figures have used the crimes to argue that “Muslim grooming gangs” pose a particular threat to Britain.

Police statistics in Britain show that most offenders in child exploitation cases are white men, and most of the abuse takes place online, at home or in institutions such as schools.

But former prosecutor Nazir Afzal, who has brought many abusers to trial, says Pakistani men are disproportionately involved in the sort of street grooming seen in recent high-profile cases.

He says that reflects the high number of South Asian men working for taxi firms and takeaway restaurants in the late-night economy, as well as their widespread sexist attitudes about women.

Frankly speaking if they were ro investigate the matter in depth, i wouldn't be surprised if half of those sexual abusing was with consent of their partner and cases registered after they broke up

Just speculating

So you're saying young kids have gotten into relationships with mean looking men in their mid 30s and 40s!! The irony is you guys pull this retarded logic by blaming the girls cuz the accused are of pakistani/muslim origin. If they happen to be Hindus or Indians, I could imagine the derogatory troll fest and mockery all over this thread

Not at all

I am defending nobody and I have not blamed any girl for it, not intentionally for sure

All I am saying is, there are genuine incidents of such nature but there are too many incidents in UK where their partner blame them for such harassment after breaking off from relationship

That has become a pretty come occurrence and the whole metoo campaign is also based on this...all these actresses willingly sleep with producers and directors to get favours and after 10 years when they have become famous, use this metoo to defame them.

There Britisher's have some real issues, there must be some very strong punishment for them so it will become a lesson for the many, and they will think 100 times before they put their hands on a women or girl of any age .

This requires public lashing 80 times..

If they are Muslims, they should be punished according to Shariah Law.. :-)

You know the real issue is criminalty, power asymmetry [vulnerability] and mens need for sexual appetite. It has little to no correlation with religion. For instance last week we had another gang go down. The leader of that pedo wing was a Indian Sikh.

However the problem is people with a agenda choose to use these incidents to articulate their dispositions. Meaning they zoom into certain incidents but entirely close their eyes where the perpetrators do not fit in with their agenda. If you want to talk pedo why not talk Thailand and you can see the hyper-pedophilia that goes on there. Check out who the pedo's are and who the victims are. Obviously a young Thai girl being sodomized by a sugar daddy who is old enough to be her grandad is just looked on as 'holiday'.

Out of sight. Out of mind
