Punjab government and Canada have signed an agreement to install a five-hundred megawatt solar energy project at Cholistan.

Addressing the signing ceremony in Lahore Thursday, the Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif said that the project will be completed in two phases.

In the first phase two hundred megawatt and in second phase three hundred megawatt solar energy will be generated.

Shahbaz Sharif said the Punjab Government will start work soon on a one thousnd megawatt electricity generation project.

He said strict action will be taken against the elements involved in theft of electricity in the province.

Punjab government should create E-electricity or online-electricity since e-things are in fashion on Pak-def these days :P

Liberalize investment in energy sector.... Ganjoo

Good news. However the news is vague. There is neither mention of the cost nor any mention of time-line.

Is this project in addition to the 1000 MW Solar farm being discussed with the Chinese?

positive development and i welcome the pakistan folks in selecting a Canadian firm and going for alternative energies route! :enjoy:

Now such projects should start coming up on ground. These projects have huge initial cost but very less operating costs as compared to oil based plants and will ensure reduction in oil bills and circular debts.

I don’t deny that any investment in power generation is good news. However we must not lose sight of the fact that investment works out to be $3.5-million per MW. Compare this to a fossil plant capital cost at about $1-million per MW! Additional investment would probably be needed to connect the power to the National Grid which is quite far from Cholistan desert.

This is not a grant and Pakistan will have to back the money somehow, probably in the form of profits to the Investor. This means more expensive electricity to the consumer.

My point is that there is no need for jumping with joy.as the electricity wont be cheap.
