5 Indian An-32 "MIA" in Ukraine

. . . .
even if the five aircraft are lost what is the big deal ? Right now the fate of those aircraft is last thing on the mind of Ukranians

It's a very big deal there is no excuse for 5 large aircraft to vanish into thin air especially if they were paid to upgrade them . People always come first but i don't understand how the tragedy in Ukraine somehow is an excuse for 5 aircraft to vanish. I'm glad Ukraine does not have nukes.

It is a bloody plane not some 10 rupees pen that you can misplace

None of these were upgraded in india .. Rather it's the last batch being upgraded in Ukraine ... The same batch that got stuck in Ukraine due to conflict .. It was signed in 09-10.

Major repercussions:lol:

The deal for first batch of 40 Aircrafts would be upgraded in Ukraine & rest would be upgraded in India through Tot , in which 5 Aircraft reported untraceable of 40 Aircraft batch.

India own 106 AN-32s, 40 were to be modernised to the RE standard in Ukraine the remaining 66 in India.

Seriously? This would be a huge deal- these are five planes belonging to the IAF that India has paid to be upgraded, you can't just shrug this off.

(A batch of Indian Air Force…)
NEW DELHI: In a direct hit to India of a far-away conflict that is threatening Russia's relations with the western world, a batch of Indian Air Force military transport aircraft are stuck in Ukraine due to the ongoing border conflict and internal strife.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has revealed that the last batch of Indian Air Force AN 32 transport aircraft that had been sent to Ukraine as part of a larger $400 million deal to modernise the fleet and extend its service life are now stuck because of the conflict.

The defence minister has said that officials are working on getting the aircraft back from the crisis-torn nation and that he is hopeful that things would be sorted out shortly. The Soviet-origin AN 32 aircraft are the transport workhorse of the Indian Air Force and are vital to maintaining and supplying troops located in the Eastern and Northern borders.

As per a 2009 contract with Ukraine's state-owned Ukrspetsexport Corp, India was to send 40 aircraft for upgrade over four years, starting 2011.

At least 30 of these have been returned. Another 65 of the aircraft were to be upgraded with Ukrainian help at an Indian facility in Kanpur. The upgrade would extend the service life of the transporters from 25 years to 40 years.

While several batches of the aircraft have been refurbished and flown back to India since 2011, Parrikar's statement indicates that the last batch of 5-10 aircraft that were to be completed by March 2014 are now stuck with efforts on the retrieve them.

The conflict with Russia has severely affected Ukraine's industry as large parts of the nation that provided equipment are now under rebel hands. Parrikar said efforts are on to find alternate sources for Ukrainian spares with efforts on to find suppliers in Israel and France.

Also, flying of military aircraft has been restricted in Ukraine after the shooting town of Malaysian Airlines MH 17 last year.

Its not lost just stuck due to parts

This news can't be as absurd as it sounds, surely? You can't just lose track of 5 planes and especially not those belonging to another nation.

Bite me.

What are we going to ask the Ukrainians?

Right now they are involved in a bloodbath of a split between Russia and NATO nation.

Their basic needs are threatened right now, let alone upgrading others' weapons.

IF true (the planes are untraceable/stolen/lost) the political ramifications for the Defence Minister and his party will be huge.

Well, Parikkar will have to push for the MRTA as soon as humanly possible.

We can't afford to get our transport fleet stuck in another country.

The earliest MRTA if signed today seriously, would be available by 2017 (since it is based on a proven design).

Clarification on Wrong Reporting by a Certain Section of Media

1. Reports in a section of media on Indian War Planes go missing during upgrade is baseless and has been confirmed by Indian Air Force (IAF).

2. The last five AN-32s which were sent for upgrade to Ukraine are available in a factory in Ukraine.

3. There have been delays in upgrade due to non availability of components as a result of the ongoing Geo-Political stand off between Ukraine and Russia.

No way mate, the plane is nowhere near production today let alone its first test flight. As usual the Russians have royally screwed India, the earliest one can expect the MRTA in Indian service is 2020 but even that is a very optimistic estimate IMHO.
