3G opens modern IT avenues in Pakistan

Tuesday, 22 Jun, 2010

ISLAMABAD: For the first time the country on Monday braced the third generation technology (3G) experience, which delivers improved and faster data speeds to support a suite of multimedia and rich cellular call applications.

A journalist also made the first-ever call in Pakistan through the 3G at a soft launch of this latest technology by Nokia Siemens Networks.

Briefing the journalists on 3G experience Saad Waraich, country director for Nokia Siemens Networks, said one could easily forecast an early official launch of 3G.

“It’s a matter of some months, rather weeks and 3G would hit the Pakistani market with a bang,” he said, adding that his company was already providing 3G solutions to two major telecoms operators, while 14 companies were in contract with Nokia. Moreover, 25 companies were in touch for contracts, he added.

“We are market leader in the business as we are providing these services to 160 companies around the world,” he added.

He said the unabated growth of the telecoms consumers reflected a successful experience of 3G as the broadband users were growing manifold by the each day passing.

“Only during the past two years, the broadband users grew from 150,000 to 800,000. Through minor investment, the companies experienced multiple growth of data users and the consumers today are experiencing much cheaper and faster access,” he said.

He said the telecoms operators have no choice but to go for 3G or even the Long Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G technology.

When asked whether Pakistani market was ripe for 3G, Waraich said Pakistani market was much more ready than Nigeria, which had already launched 3G technology.

The growth indicators reflect that Pakistani market needs 3G or 4G (LTE) technology, he said and added, though some of the operators are reluctant to go for 3G as it would make them invest further, the Internet Provider (IP) base is ready for the launch of 3G or even 4G.

There are more than 1.25 million Facebook users and even more using Youtube. All these users need 3G,” he added.

To another question whether or not the operators may benefit from infrastructure sharing, Waraich said it was feasible and many operators around the globe were benefiting from this experience.—APP

Unveiling a new mobile broadband experience
By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: With Pakistan’s telecommunication industry witnessing strong growth, the need for a richer communications services in the country is raising the demand for 3G and 4G. New services, now and in the future, require higher speeds at an affordable cost, said Pakistan Country Director for Nokia Siemens Networks, Saad Waraich, during a press briefing here on Monday.
He said that is was clear that broadband could change Pakistan as it connects rural businesses and consumers to the rest of the world, enables new ways of doing business and adds agility to urban enterprises. In fact, as per a Broadband Survey conducted by Nokia Siemens Networks in 2009, the desire to use mobile and data applications in Pakistan (surfing the web and application downloading) reaches up to 55 percent of the population. Usage of audio/music mobile downloading alone has shown an interest rate of 88 percent.

He said the usage of broadband increased to about 0.5 million currently from 0.150 million users two years ago. He stressed the need for access to the telecom infrastructure already existed in the country and also advocated telecom network simplification in the country.

Even though i hate the telecom in USA, have AT&T btw, but i would like Pakistani Telecom giants offering unlimited data packages like USA at cheap rates. That is where they will make the real money. Otherwise it is still too expensive for people. For once the mobile internet takes shape, more people can benefit from smartphones like iPhone and Android based phones rather than just paying thousands of rupees to buy em and nothing to do on them.

The fact that you can buy any cellphone you want and put in a SIM at cheap rate is what really put Pakistan at the forefront of Mobile Telecom. I hope they continue to improve and offer more services like live TV etc.

I have been waiting for this since I had IPhone 3G, now its too old, but better late then never  :yahoo:

Thank god, i hope this will bring down the cost of operating a CDMA modem on one of the major carriers, and improve the download rate, which on a certain carrier i don't want to name is pretty pathetic at the moment.

US Telcos are actually going in the direction of Pakistani companies :-)

AT&T has retracted its unlimited 3G data plan and will only allow metered usage from now on. Every incremental 1G is going to cost $10, in addition to the base price. So it is going to get quite pricey with 3G video calling, streaming etc.

It must be pointed out that Pakistani voice, international and SMS rates are between 10X and 100X lower than comparable US rates.

Pakistani telecoms should have just moved to 4g its would have been a better choice.

One step at a time. 3G equipment is lot cheaper and is it is now mature technology. People in Pakistan do not need expensive cutting-edge technology in mobile phones. If the mobile companies pay premium for latest technology then down the line people's phone bills would be expensive too.

This was a demo on a roadshow of their LTE products. NSN tested HDSPA for Telenor way back in 2008.

Has 4g or work on 4g by I think mobilelink...

Nahraf..Agreed 3G is currently the technology that should be implemented and dragged till 2013..before moving on to 4G.
