36 Sri Lankans gone to Syria; some to join ISIS: Def. Secy. ::: Dailymirror.lk ::: Breaking News

At least 36 Sri Lankans are reported to have gone to Syria with some of them having joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group, Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi said today.

He said according to reports, several Sri Lankans with their families including several women and children have been among those who had gone to Syria.

“They had said they were going on pilgrimage but I believe that some of them had joined the ISIS” he said.

Mr. Hettiarachchi said he was not in possession of the details of how or with whom they had left the country.

Last year in July, a 37-year-old Sri Lankan, who had joined ISIS was reportedly killed during a bombing raid in Syria.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hettiarachchi requested the media and other organizations to be cautious and act responsibly when reporting on the ISIS.(DS)

As long as those brainwashed fuktards does not return or allowed to return i see it as a positive thing.. They're more than welcome to go blow up their sorry arses in Syria or whatever other Islamic hell hole in the Middle East.. Good riddance as far as i'm concerned

.
After what these moors faced from LTTE, they want to export the same (with interest).

Hope they are a very tiny minority and yes may these all go to hell as quick as possible.

Has that azizam guy been banned?...his comments were sometimes quite interesting.

It would be a great Social work if they blow up themselves somewhere alone but the problem is they Kill other people with themselves which is catastrophic.

Bad news but I am very Much confident that Sri Lankans authorities will handle the situation effectively,There should be no doubt about it. Sri Lanka Has already proved their capabilities by Winning decades old Civil war .

A very small minority indeed, But there are worrying signs, Increasing signs of self segregation, Increased display of alien Arabic customs, Hate speech/ Fundamentalism and on the flip side majority reactions to it, Often violent

Unfortunate if Indeed @Azizam is banned, A valuable poster despite sometimes coming off a bit strong in his convictions

Like these two idiots are going to do anything:

PM-Ranil-Wickremesinghe-President-Maithripala-Sirisena.jpg

Both certified imbeciles. On the left is Sri Lanka's prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe - bent over backwards to please the Tamil Tigers. On the right is Sri Lanka's president Maithripala Sirisena - a dullard who is worried about bra throwing at a concert.

Sri Lanka is basically screwed with two idiots in power who care for nothing but their own personal glory and power.

And on the sidelines is this hag:

I am confident in SL capabilities to keep a close watch on this trend and deal with it as it sees fit given the past living nightmare.

Nevertheless it is definitely a disturbing thing to see come from such a place like SL.

Yah he didnt mince his words, but I for one will miss his presence and input....just in case he is reading this from afar.

It's good SL is keeping an eye on them before anything bad happens.
Most Muslims in SL are anti extremist so GoSL should be able to take help from Muslim community to help watch ISIS recruits

ISIS lures TWO Lankans a month » The Nation

At least two Sri Lankans reportedly join the ISIS every month amidst recent security measures to control IS (aka ISIS) presence in Sri Lanka, experts on terrorism have said.

The Government last week announced that 36 Sri Lankans had joined the IS movement so far, following which the security agencies were on full alert.

Head of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR) at the Nanyang University, Singapore, Prof. Rohan Gunaratna said the number of Sri Lankans in the IS would exceed 50 by the end of the year.

“The real threat is not travel, but the spread of the radical and violent ideology of IS both in the virtual and physical space in Sri Lanka,” he said.

However, he added that even though the IS presented a growing threat to Sri Lanka, South Asia and the world, Sri Lanka has managed the threat exceptionally well, compared to most South Asian governments.

“Sri Lankan government is working closely with the Muslim organizations to engage the Sri Lankan Muslim youth,” he added.

The Defence Ministry on January 6 issued a communiqué stating that the security forces and all intelligence wings were on full alert on possible links to IS or its emergence in the country.

Prof. Gunaratna added Sri Lankan, Indian and Bangladeshi Muslims are resilient to IS ideology. He pointed out that despite the growing threat of IS, less than 1 percent of the Muslims backed the movement.

“Over 100 nationals have travelled from these three countries to join IS in Syria. Even those who went, within a year, at least 50 percent of them wanted to return home,” he added.

“In the case of the Maldives, the IS threat has spread due to the political instability and the archipelagic nature. The Maldives should build a rehabilitation program to deradicalize Muslims radicalized by IS and a community engagement program to immunize their society from IS messaging,” he said.

Prof. Gunaratna added that the Sri Lankan government must continue to work closely with all Muslim organizations. “The government should develop programs and initiatives to engage the Muslim youth and ensure that they are not deceived by the IS ideology,” he said.
