In a company, if the boss spies the employees computer, smartphone, cctv, internet connections is ok and legal.

But if the employees spy the boss is illegal and he will be fired.

The same between empires and vassal states.

The US spies on all allies. We already knew this. Some allies try to spy on the US too. It is frustrating that when the US gets caught, no one faces punishment but when allies get caught, they rot in jail for decades.

This is similar to a story of a US official in the UK who carelessly drove on the wrong side of the road and killed a boy on his bike. She fled to the US and the US government will not extradite her to face charges. She got away with it. And the UK is supposed to be a major ally.
