3 Force modernization drive: Tk 12, 985 crore proposed as defence budget

I am sure that in 2013 they will going to order 30 JF-17 Block-II along with its dual seat too.
They are looking for EU/US fighters??? that seems a different explain why?

Well BD is not going for EU/US fighters. Our only options are Chinese or Russian fighters. As Chinese are not able to deliver any 4++ generation fighter right at this moment, the natural choice is Russia who we have excellent defense relations with. We dont think we are looking for fighter in the segment of JF-17 as we already ordered upgraded version of F-7 BGI.

According to a procurement proposal sent to the board, F-16 and JAS-39 gripen has been screened out of 4++ generation fighter procurement program. Three are now two contenders left Mig-29 and Su-30 with multiple versions in consideration.

For Mig-29 the following versions are under evaluation:
1. Mig-29SMT
2. Mig-29M/M2
3. Mig-29MMRCA

For Su-30 the following versions are under evaluation:
1. Su-30MKB
2. Su-30MK2
3. Su-30M2

The total number varies from 32 to 80 (nobody could confirm). 16 (1 squadron) of which shall be ordered in 2013 Q3 according to the proposal. The total number to be ordered eventually, may get split between Mig-29 and su-30 as well.

Lets wait and see what happens.

Umm can you please post your source? Plus what were their reasons for rejecting Gripen?

BRO, I'VE been saying it all along but as saying goes, "Chora Na Shune Dharmer Kahini"; RAWamy thieves along with Bharati leaning so-called defence procurement specialists are bulldozing it in wrong direction. I even advocate in getting rid of existing MIGs because of having 2 engines that doesn't bode well with BD's small air space and buying more F-7 BGIs, JF-10s. But Ruskie's notoriety of providing kickbacks is generating RAWamy/Corrupt fat arse Gen's saliva of greed IMO.

What does bharat has to do with this huh
BD is a sovriegn nation they chose thier weapons on thier own

That guy has some paranoia. He thinks SU-30 will be used against Pakistan as it has the range. So BD should never buy high end fighter to safeguard Pakistan.

Thats around 1.5 billion $..if this is full budget including salary then how much can they buy with remaining amount ?or am i missing something ?

India and Pakistan equally boasts about their defence budget. But, for Bd it is different for obvious reasons. BD does not speak of the real budget. The budget you are speaking about is certainly not our total defence budget. This budget is meant for salaries, allowances, maintenace of garrisons, food and other logistics, but not the purchase of weapons.

Weapons come under different categories, such as heavy machines or construction equipments etc and most of our planes and ships come under sellers credit by bilateral treaties. These are certainly not shown in the budget.

I think (not that i have proof), they rejected because of single engine and both share common equipments, weapons etc. Also, we are not familiar with western fighters and we have lots of missiles, bombs and avionics suited for Russian Jets mainly.

Are you being serious? A single SQD of Su-30s would drain the entire BD defence budget not to mention their up-keep would eat the defenc ebudgets for the next decade. If the PAF can't afford modern 2 engined fighters there is no way BD can right now. (Mig-29s don't count so much)

Not to mention doctrinal conflict.

Defense purchases are not included in the budget.

Although, BD procuring Su-30s is speculation at best for now.

Not to mention...were SAAB and Lockheed even willing to supply us the Gripen and F-16?

Although, the equipment, missiles, bombs and avionics part makes sense. Buying all that stuff from Western suppliers is very expensive.

BAL Govt has announced many "drives", "projections", "forces' goals", etc to fool the people and contain the military. In actual fact the list of purchases do not include offensive eqpt, weapons with punch. For instance, no submarines, modern frigates or corvettes, and the MBT-2000 is still to arrive. Nothing to counter IAF or IA's long range guns or battle tanks.

We'll just wait and see. The MBT-2000 is confirmed and expected to arrive in 2013. Rest like the Flankers are all speculations for now.

And historically, it is the AL that spends more on the military than BNP does. This is done to give the military an equal footing given that the military never trusted the AL to begin with.

I dont think so. The procurement plans published in the newspapers(not tabloid ones) and shown in military open house all came true.

Submarine is in its tentative stage. Bangladesh navy members received training in turkey this year on how to operate one.

The corvettes are actually our LPCs. The first one was laid down about a fortnight ago and the second one is going to be laid down soon

As far as i as i know the frigate purchase agreement the groundwork of which was laid during the visit of prime minister Sheikh Hasina to China in March 2010. As reported in newspaper, we will be using 2012-2013 and 2016-2017 to buy them.

Our defence doctorine isnt india centric. Furthermore we are building up our force slowly, our economy does not allow us to buy lot of stuff at one go

Hasina knows military is the only establishment that can take her down. Furthermore, i think these defence procurements will continue with the BNP era. BNP made a lot of noise when BNS bangabandhu and the migs were bought, but are not attacking AL for their ambitious plan for the armed forces mainly because of the burmese standoff. Furthermore with the verdict of the sea boundaries coming soon and prospect of finding oil and gas, i dont think either of the ladies would want to pi$$ of the armed forces by giving them weapons

who is this mordernisation aimed at ? i mean hasina has said that she wants to make bd armed forces a deterrent force. but deterrent against whom ?

and why would the armed forces et pi$$ed off if they get weopons ? i hope that part is typo :D

A strong nation needs a strong armed force and does not need to be aimed at anybody. Look at USA, they are not any country centric yet they aim at everybody. Just think outside the box.

The modernisation is aimed at no one in particular. This modernisation plans are taking place to replace the old inefficient weapons with new ones which uses modern technology. This modernisation plans will help bangladesh armed forces to adapt to the demands of modern warfare.

Take for example bangladesh has anti-aircraft guns since the 80's, the anti aircraft guns were quite good for that era for aerial defence. But now fighter aircrafts are getting more advanced, thus our anti aircraft guns are becoming obsolete. Thus SAMs are bought to modernise our military and fulfill the demands of modern warfare.( my example may not be very accurate but you get my point)

This deterrence is against anyone(be it India, Burma or any other country) who threatens our national sovereignty.

Take for example the standoff against the burmese. When we found out the burmese were exploring the disputed waters with naval escorts, we sent our warships there, this made the burmese to back off from that part of the bay. Now imagine what would have happened if we only had a few riverine patrol boats in our navy and demanded that the burmese back off from the disputed water. Thus a deterrent force is necessary for bangladesh

"the armed forces get pi$$ed off if they get weopon" yea that part was a typo, i meant to say if they didnt get the weapons they were promised, they would get pi$$ed off
