3,500 jobs to go in PIA cull by end 2017

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is evaluating an order for wide-body Airbus and Boeing jets as it looks to upgrade its ageing fleet, an executive for the state-owned airline said on Tuesday.

“Boeing 777X would be a good option,” the airline’s executive director of human resources and works, Raheel Ahmed, told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference in Dubai.

The airline is also looking at the Airbus A330 and A350 models, he added.

PIA would consider purchasing the aircraft directly from the manufacturer and financing the order through a sale and leaseback arrangement. It would also consider a direct leasing agreement, known as a dry lease.

A sale and leaseback is when the airline sells the jet to a lessor who then leases it back.

Ahmed did not say when PIA would make the order or how many jets it could buy.

PIA has a fleet of 38 narrow-body and wide-body Airbus and Boeing jets, Ahmed said, with three A310s to be retired on Dec. 31.

Ahmed also said PIA would cut its 18,000 workforce by between 3,000 and 3,500 employees by the end of 2017 as the Pakistan government looks to turn around the loss-making airline and sell-off a 49 percent stake.

As part of the turnaround, the airline will spin-off four “special business units” from January 2017, starting with its catering business and later its flight training, engineering and courier businesses.

The units are planned to operate independently of PIA with their own general managers and marketing teams, Ahmed said, adding PIA would later look to sell a stake in the units if they’re profitable.

Its good to hear that

3500 jobs = 50,000 = 175,000,000 worth of savings per month or 210 crore rupees worth of savings per annum

PIA need to cut employment by up to 50% in order to run affairs more professionally

The least they can do is, impose ban on further recruitments for few years except the pilots and some exclusive job roles so the number of employees gets reduced with every retirement

Average salary of PIA is mere 50,000 PKR ?

Just speculating as there are odd jobs as well

The pilot might be earning over 50 lakh or so

But I am talking about the average jobs of low skilled workers... We still need specialised people in the business so I am not even counting them

3500 workers can easily save between 2 to 10 billion rupees as a wild guess since our plane to workers ratio is one of the highest in the world. What bites me the most is the extra bonuses and perks they enjoy like free tickets once a year etc which is really tearing down the business of PIA

What makes you think that the 3,500 jobs are held by inefficient employees or political appointees?

i read an article from ft and it says the ratio of people to aircraft is one of the highest in the world at about 700 per plane where as the aver are is less than half of that.

PIAA has been marred by political hiring, once you travel with them, you know by interacting with the cabin crew.

Compare -

Easyjey 233 aircraft >10,000 employees
PIA 38 aircraft > 18,000 employees

Recipe for a hard crash landing is obvious to any observer.

exactly point proven, now if easy jet has 233 planes with 10000 staff how many planes should pia have if the plane to employee ratio was the same as easyjets?
