1949-1960: Political instability in Pakistan-Where was Fatima Jinnah

Pakistan suffered huge political instability during first 15+ years of its birth.

Politicians of every hue and color played like Rangeela Shah Mughal emperor (or worse Nero of rome). During all these years, mather-e-millet stayed on the sidelines. Why?

Then in her 70s she became the voice of opposition as a leader of COPP (Combined Opposition Party of Pakistan). COPP was a combination off 5 parties that did not have any unity among themselves except one point agenda to beat Ayub Khan.

Such alliances have always failed in Pakistan. MMA, 9 stars etc are good example.

So the question remains?

Why did FJ fail to start a political party from 1949 and spent days without active poltical role.

Only in 1965 she was a ceremonial leader of 5 squabbling political parties.

Why?

Thank you.

She was sister of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and she knows that her brother was a true democrat and disliked monarchic politics that's why she didn't interfere into governmental affairs ... But she came up while she saw that our selfish politicians and generals have messed up ... So you opened another meaningless thread which has no point to discuss anymore ......

Her memoirs are a better clue. Her disenchantment with politics especially after finding that the so called right hand men of M.A Jinnah were waiting like vultures for his death to take over made her decide to walk away. She came back because people asked her to do so.

Pakistan was doomed from day one to exploitative politics and racial bigotry...its a miracle we have survived this long.

it was one of the logical paths I wanted to take.

But it didn't pan out when I looked at the following:

1. In 1965 they were the same politicians that she was trying to lead. nothing changed!
2. She was utterly disgusted with Liaqat Ali Khan. but LAK was assassinated in 1951. Why didn't she try to lead Muslim league then?
3. If she had no hope in Muslim League, why did she not start training new party and establish some thing more credible politically.

There are many more. but these three stand out.

1. She may not have been disenchanted with all of them, additionally.. the dictator had single handedly put the politicains out of business.

2. She had no reasons to.. it was NOT just LAK she was disgusted with. Ghulam Mohammad for instance, was forbidden to even come near her house.. she let her dogs loose on him. :D

3. Nostalgia, one last hurrah perhaps. Moreover, the ML was still the platform that her brother used and one that was most identifiable with. I think her coming in was more of people finally convincing a "rootha" person to lead them again than someone trying to politically exploitative.

Clues to this came from another book I read but the name escapes me, perhaps you can recall the famous lady politician who was also a princess.. often seen with boyish cuts on and off with Nawabzadah Nasrullah??

But she was leading COPP not ML.
It was a more like

Kahin kee eeant kahin ka rorra
bhan mati nain kumba jorra

With due respect off course.

That is true, but then against an all powerful dictator, she perhaps may have calculated that as a risk.Again, we would be too unfair to her in considering her political skills and judgement at anywhere close to that of her brother who was nothing short of a genius in that field much before the idea of Pakistan ever came up.

So whilst she may have held an ideal, her usage of her political power might not have been the most astute against an illegal dictator who was doing his best to make sure that everything went his way.

Bhai Zarvan sahib

I respect you. But please read the timeline before answering it.

Bhai jaan you cannot confuse 1965 with political instability from 1949-1958 to be precise.

Thank you

Sad, very sad. She was never a politician but a philanthropist and she remained active in that role during all these years. Why would she get herself into politics when this was not her subject? secondly when most of the politicians who worked with Quid-e-Azam were still alive? She only came out when she noticed that all the politicians were side-lined by Ayub and nobody was willing to challenge him. Consider her age, and then see that a woman challenged Ayub only because the men had donned bangles and you are taking cheap shots at such a great lady. Truly pathetic.

If only we had more people like you.
This country would have disintegrated long ago.

Please do not confuse the period of 1948-1958 with 1965.

She tried to become a politician suddenly in 1965, while the country was made an international joke by the squabbling politicians all the way from 1948-1958.

Politics is not a joke, and she must have known about this and learned it from Jinnah himself.

Then why did she ignore the need to setup proper political structure BEFORE jumping in elections.

It is like throwing a baby in the pool without life vest.

Not cool!

If only we had more people like you. On this occasion I will make a exception and post later my views on the subject.

Thank you Atanz bhai

Thank you.

She would have learnt politics from her brother is a plain assumption and there is nothing that supports this understanding. When she did not actively participate during the lifetime of her brother, why would she do that later? She jumped into the politics because she was aware that at that point of time she was the only personality in the United Pakistan that was not controversial and people respected her. She thought that being revered as the Mother of the Nation, she would be able to bring much needed stability in Pakistan especially with reference to East Pakistan for she was not unaware what Ayub's cahoots were doing there and how East Pakistanis were on their way to get independence from the hegemony of the West. Both Quid e Azam and Madar Millat would be turning in their graves learning that certain keyboard warriors are questioning their sincerity and actions.

Un marey huye logon ki izzat ko to bakhsh do ya sab ko bey-izzat karney ka theka ley rakha hey?

That's what I call political naivity of epic proporation.

Polticis is not a one day game
or one year game
or one month game.

you gotta prepare your followers and put in place institutions over long period of time.

only then one can be successful.

Otherwise it is just show-shaw!

Whatever it was, she was every bit a better, honest, and most trustworthy person than anybody available at that time. Nothing is more pathetic than questioning her motives but it has become sort of fashionable these days to ridicule people of such stature to prove oneself as a 'scholar'. With friends like you does Pakistan need enemies? I do not think so.

Meray piray bhai

you are confusing the characteristics of son/daughter-in-law with a politician.
