Surat: The recovery of at least 18 bombs here created a wave of panic in the diamond city on Tuesday, three days after serial blasts rocked Ahmedabad, but police managed to defuse them.

The bombs were found in and around Varacha area, where most of the diamond polishing units of the South Gujarat city are located. Surat accounts for 80 percent of the world's diamond polishing business. Special: Ahmedabad serial blasts | Full coverage

Police imposed a virtual curfew in Varacha and the only relief to the local administration was none of the bomb exploded and they were defused in time.

"We have found 18 bombs today and defused all of them," Surat police commissioner R M S Brar told reporters on Tuesday evening.

Three bombs each were found from Gajera Circle, Mini Diamond Market, Varacha-Kapodra flyover, two each from Heerabaug, Bhavani Circle and one each from Mahidarpura, Sardar Choki, Labheshwar Police Chowki, Santoshinagar and Matavadi, where it was hanging on a tree.

"Most of the information regarding the bombs had come from people. I would request the people to be more alert and immediately inform the police if they find any suspicious material," Brar said.

He said the bombs were of low intensity but did not clarify whether there were timer device or not.

The Gujarat government believes the bombs found in Surat are an attempt to distract attention from investigations in Ahmedabad serial blasts, sources said.

I dunno how many more cities are in the radar.. am guessing Hyderabad is next!!

Terrorists are not fools: Gujarat Govt Agencies

Ahmedabad, July 29: The Gujarat government believes that bombs found in Surat are an attempt to distract attention from investigations of serial blasts in the city.

"This seems to be an attempt to distract attention from Ahmedabad serial blasts or they are planning to strike somewhere else and are trying to distract the attention of country's authorities," a top state government functionary said.

"Terrorists are not fools that they will allow the people and police to find bombs in such a large number. If they had intended to strike in Surat they would have timed it in such a manner that they explode. They have used timer device in Ahmedabad and many other places in the country where the blasts took place," he said.

"Do you think that the terrorist will park car-laden with explosives in the middle of the city and allow the police to find them. This is definitely an attempt to mislead," he said.

Eighteen bombs have been found in Surat and defused.

Muslims in India protest against acts of terror
July 29th, 2008 - 10:51 pm ICT by ANI - Email This Post Email This Post

New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): People from Muslim community took to streets in New Delhi on Tuesday to protest against last week’’s serial bomb blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad allegedly by Islamic militants.
The agitators, who gathered near the historical Jantar Mantar in the heart of the city, shouted slogans voicing the anguish over the loss of several human lives in the blasts spree the country has witnessed in recent times.
The protesters demanded stern action against those involved in heinous crime of killing innocent people.
Whatever is happening in the country is not right. We demand that perpetrators of such crimes should not merely be given punishments like life imprisonment but they should be hanged so that rest of them learn the appropriate lesson, said Mohammad Mustaqueem, member of All India Muslim Youth Anti Terrorist Forum.
The 16 bombings, claiming 45 lives, in Ahmedabad on Saturday came a day after blasts in the IT hub of Bangalore in which one woman died, sparking criticism that authorities were lax in probing militant groups that were using increasingly brazen tactics.
India has often accused militant groups from Pakistan and Bangladesh of helping local militants to carry out a wave of bombings in recent years, with targets ranging from mosques to Hindu temples to busy market places. (ANI)

Indian Muslims’ umbrella body condemns Ahmadabad blasts

By Khabrein.info News Desk:

New Delhi, 28 July 2008: Indian Muslims’ umbrella body (AIMMM) has condemned Ahmadabad blasts that have killed more than fifty people so far. Zafarul-Islam Khan, the president of All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat has expressed “deep pain and concern” over the bomb blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Offering his sincere condolences to the family members of the innocent victims, he said that no effort should be spared to nab the real culprits behind these dastardly crimes against the country and the people of India.

Khan cautioned the police, security and intelligence agencies not to hurry to make statements or leak information until proper investigations are completed. He called upon these agencies and the central and state home ministries to probe all possible suspects and all possible beneficiaries from such crimes.

Khan said that a certain political party which has usurped the common plank of fighting terrorism is a sure beneficiary of such incidents in view of the forthcoming elections. He noted that these terrorist incidents are taking place in states ruled by this particular party and the chief minister of another state ruled by this party has already predicted that the next target of these crimes will be his state.

Khan specifically said that Hindutva criminal and terrorist gangs, responsible for similar crimes in the recent past in places like Nanded, Parbhani, Tenkasi and Thane, should be included within the purview of the current and future probes into all terrorist acts in the country.

AIMMM president observed that such criminal gangs have received support from the Shiv Sena supremo and his newspaper "Samna" but the Maharashtra state authorities have failed to take any action to date against him or his newspaper for openly supporting and encouraging terrorism.

Zafarul Islam Khan asked the central government to form a high powered neutral panel of retired judges, human rights activists, top lawyers and journalists to oversee the investigations into all terrorist acts. Such a neutral panel is needed to restore the Muslim community's faith in the investigations by security and intelligence agencies which, due to their consistently one-sided probes after each such criminal act, have totally forfeited the confidence of the Muslim community.

Dr Khan also asked the central government to keep a sharp eye on the dubious activities of foreign intelligence agencies like Mossad and FBI which are operating freely in our country. He asked the central government to immediately close down the offices of all such foreign intelligence agencies as their presence on our soil is not in the interest of the peace and security of the country.

Glitch saved Surat from possible mayhem

NEW DELHI: Gujarat continues to remain tense a day after 18 bombs were defused in Surat.

The state administration has called for a bandh on Wednesday following the panic that spread across the city on Tuesday.

Much to the relief of the city's administration, none of the bombs exploded and were all defused in time. Police had imposed a virtual curfew in and around Varacha area, where most of the bombs were found.

Forensic experts in Surat say that the reason the 18 bombs planted in the city by terrorists did not explode is because there was a technical flaw in the integrated circuits wired in them.

For the first time ICs have been used in explosive devices, say experts.

The failed ICs have now become the core of the entire investigation and also a puzzle for the FSL experts.

Officials told TOI that once the make of the ICs and their batch numbers are decoded several links in the investigation will surface.

Police on Tuesday detained four persons from Maharashtra and seized maps of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab and some materials written in Urdu, three days after the serial bomb blasts in Ahmedabad.

"We have detained four people with maps of various cities of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab. They also had some Urdu literature on them," Surendranagar District Superintendent of Police Ashok Yadav told news agencies.

They have been identified as Tariq Ahmed Sheikh, Imrankhan Mohammadkhan, Vazir Khan Pathan and Hakimshah Fakir, police said.

The police were trying to determine whether they had any links with the July 26 bombings in which 53 people were killed and more than 200 injured.

"All of them are from Maharashtra," Yadav added. "We are currently interrogating them and cannot reveal anything further."

Urdu experts have been called to find out the contents of the literature seized from the quartet, police officials said.

The police were trying to find out if they had any links with outfits like SIMI or Indian Mujahideen and the purpose of their visit to Gujarat. They were also trying to know why they had taken maps of the three states with them.

Earlier, police had detained three persons with cash from Surendranagar and handed them over the City Crime Branch.

Ahmedabad police is also probing the email sent to television and media organisations purportedly by 'Indian Mujahideen' from the Navi Mumbai area. The cars with explosives found in Surat were stolen from Navi Mumbai, police said.

The crime branch is coordinating with other security agencies in probing possible links of pan-national groups in the attacks.

A team from Rajasthan police is in Surat to assist the crime branch with the investigation into the serial explosions, which bears similarity with the Jaipur blasts in May this year.

A technical glitch in all 18 bombs??

Perhaps a more reasonable explanation may be that the point that the bombers sought to make, that is to expose to the general public their ability to conduct such was made without the explosions - is that a reasonable explanation or a more plausable one?

Perhaps, It is a difficult guess as their can be different possibilities and all intended to scare or execute bombs to take innocent lives hence one needs to be sensitive.
