The Indian Navy has lost 15 Sea Harrier fighter aircraft in various accidents since 1983, Defence Minister A K Antony told the Lok Sabha today.

In written reply to a question in the House, he said, "15 Sea Harrier fighters and three trainers have been lost in accidents since 1983. Only three aircraft accidents out of these have been attributed to material failure."

He said strengthening of air combat capability of the Navy is an ongoing process through upgradation and acquisition.

On operating MiG-29K aircraft from aircraft carrier INS Viraat, Antony said, "MiG-29K cannot be operated from INS Viraat since it employs the Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) technique whereas INS Viraat is a Short Take Off Vertical Landing (STOVL) facility carrier."

He also informed the House that Navy has already commissioned one nuclear-powered submarine, procured from Russia on lease in January.

On augmenting the submarine capability of the Navy, he said, "Contract was signed with Mazagon Dock Limited in October, 2005 for construction of six Scorpene submarines for the Navy under Transfer of Technology from DCNS France."

Replying to a question on upgradation of aircraft fleet for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Antony said, "The MiG-21 and MiG-27 have been upgraded. The MiG-29, Mirage-2000, Jaguar and An-32 aircraft are in the process of upgradation."

On purchase of transport aircraft for IAF, he said, "The Defence Acquisition Council accorded Acceptance of Necessity for procurement of 56 aircraft as replacement of Avro aircraft under the Buy and Make category on July 23."

For a fighter of such vintage a crash once every 2 years is not terrible it is just a joke that no replacements were procured so the IN has the situation of an ever decreasing force. Granted delays of INS VIKRAMDITYA has played to part but still unacceptable.

RAF and USMC has also, had illoustrious History of Harrier Crashes...Atleast 14 for RAF alone from 1990s- 2010

It is an established fact that Harriers are one of the most difficult a/c in history to fly and extremly prone to crashing due to the slightest mistake by the pilot. It is good that the Harriers are being phased out, their replacments are 4.5++ gen with advanced FBW with multiple redundances and are extremly forgiving and I'm told a dream to fly.

Taking into consideration, the comparison in sorties and missions flown by each air force.
Remember the USMC and RAF/RN aircraft have been involved in Gulf wars and now in Afghanistan.

SHAR as we call them are yes indeed difficult to Balance when Thrust nozzles are directed at -90/270 from 0 Degrees . Many crashes have been attributed to uncontrolled Yaw. INAS 300 Flys upto 180 hrs/annum which is good seeing this Maintenance hungry machine

2003 data:
The Harrier, renowned for its ability to take off and land vertically like a helicopter, has amassed the highest major accident rate of any military plane now in service. Forty-five Marines have died in 148 noncombat accidents. More than a third of the fleet of 397 has been lost to accidents in the 32-year history of the single-seat jet.

High rate is the norm of the Harrier's.

India is famous for crashing. No news here.

Why are you keeping these junk? Even our F-7PG can take these junk fighters out.
