‘14 years in jail if you kill cow, 2 years if you kill people’, Delhi judge wonder why cows value more than human life

While announcing quantum of punishment on a case of mowing down a motorcyclist with a luxury car in 2008, a Delhi judge has made a significant observation. Apparently raising concerns over the current state of affairs, the judge wondered how present-day laws provide more stringent punishment to perpetrators of cattle-related crimes than those who take human lives.

“The sentence for killing cow is five, seven or 14 years in different states, but the sentence for causing the death of a human being through rash or negligent driving is only two years,” additional sessions judge Sanjeev Kumar noted.

Kumar sentenced the son of a Haryana-based industrialist to two years’ imprisonment on Saturday for mowing down a motorcyclist with his BMW car in 2008.

The court on Saturday held the accused, 30-year-old Utsav Bhasin, guilty of rash driving, voluntarily causing hurt on provocation and causing death by negligence, besides announcing a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.

The convict Bhasin, who was a BBA student, had crushed Anuj Chauhan and his friend, Mrigank Srivastava, under his BMW car at Moolchand in South Delhi on the night of 11 September 2008. While Chauhan died in a city hospital, Srivastava survived the accident.

Bhasin was arrested from ISBT Kashmere Gate while he was fleeing to Chandigarh.

The verdict was passed in May and quantum of punishment was pronounced only on Saturday, Hindustan Timesreports. The court also granted statutory bail to Bhasin, enabling him to file an appeal in the high court. The bail bond was fixed at Rs 50,000 with surety of a similar amount.

Bhasin was earlier cleared of culpable homicide, which provides for a maximum jail term of up to 10 years.

The court also stated that the judgment must be sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, so he can consider steps to enhance the punishment prescribed for such offences.

Cow god should be able to protect itself from us mere humans.

Serious question to cow worshipper... Burning house with a cow in it and (god forbid) your family (human) member...you can only save one...who would you save?

Yes, India should become a full Hindu Rashtra by 2019. So we don't have any more self righteous Indians lecturing others on religious extremism.

A cow is more trustworthy and loyal than those who kill and eat it.

some of the dumb idiots here don't understand how does the law function , we should go into specifics of the case , was it a hit & run case or an accident & was there a lack of evidence , of course he being a son of an influential industrialist must have hired a top lawyer who know to play around and get the minimum sentence , this happens in every country & its a flaw in our system , but to say that the law itself gives more importance to cow than humans is utter bullsht because when you kill a cow it is treated as a murder not as an accident so the quantum of punishment has got to be more in comparison to an accident , murder of a human being will still get you life imprisonment , ofcourse the muslims in india would want us to start following sharia law of these ragtag muslim countries , we don't need any lectures from them , courts function on evidence not on emotional melodrama
