Turks dont have GPS system to locate the positions of ships?? Its simple tec that usually used to locate ships. Only USA has the GPS system that cover the google needs and entire world, it seems USA govt has turned of the GPS system for Turkish Navy ships to locate them in sea therefore Turk Navy fail to detect these 14 Navel ships.

With suspicions growing that the commanders of the vessels could have been behind a coup plot against the Turkish government and are now seeking asylum at Greek ports.

The ships were on duty in either the Aegean or the Black Seas on Friday before the coup to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took place. However, they have failed to return to port, though in theory radar and satellite tracking technology should be able to determine their locations, according to a report in the Times newspaper.

It is believed that the ships could be heading towards Greek ports.

The Turkish deputy prime minister, Numan Kurtulmus, has dismissed reports that any naval vessels have gone missing. However, he did not give any further details as to their current location.

Eight Turkish military officers have already sought asylum in Greece after landing in the country on Saturday, where they were subsequently arrested.

The Turkish ambassador to Greece, Kerim Uras, has told the Greek authorities that the soldiers who fled to Greece will have a “fair and transparent trial in Turkey.”

He added that if the soldiers are not returned Turkey, this would not help bilateral relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, the fate of the commander of the Turkish Navy Admiral Veysel Kosele, who has not been heard from since the attempted coup took place, is still unknown. It is also unclear if he took any part in the action against the president or whether he is being held against his will.

According to reports within the Turkish media, Admiral Kosele was tricked onto his ship by those supporting the coup who told him that a terrorist attack was taking place.

Yeah, this post makes no sense. GPS is not for finding the holder of the device - it doesn't broadcast your location, it determines your location by observing satellite signals. A well-built GPS will tell you where you are, but won't tell anyone looking for you anything.

The US could turn off (actually encrypt) the GPS signals for an area, but EVERYONE WHO OWNED A GPS WOULD KNOW. You can't shutdown the GPS system with any kind of stealth - so that part of the story makes no sense either.

The US could be tracking ships in the area via satellite, and might not provide this information to Turkey, if relations are bad. Turkey might not have very good tracking systems that they control themselves, I don't know.

The most likely thing to have happened is that the Navy left port to avoid having ships taken by pro-coup members of the Army, and have stayed at sea till they are sure the situation has calmed down.

Alternatively, Erdogan has some kind of follow-on plan for the the coup that involves the Navy being at sea. Or who knows what else.

Its understanding and plausible that several helicopter go missing but honestly ship going missing as if they are some small boats is something nearly impossible in today world.

US please stop supporting dictators.
Mmm, I would like the US to stop supporting Turkey. I don't think Turkey is an ally - the is a lot of anti-American sentiment, and the repression the Turkish government is using right now is a serious problem. Further, Turkish behavior in regard to Syria and it's back-and-forth on ISIS are troubling.

So, I agree that we should disentangle from Turkey. But... the government seems to be democratically elected and have popular support. So I don't think Erdogan quite qualifies as a dictator, but it is pretty repressive to his opponents. Better to keep an arm's distance away.

i am not saying tayaab is dictator, my point is , US establishment always supports dictators , when ever they saw a leader is now out of their control, and in turkey that coup attempt was supported by US, its the fact.

Of course, we understand your problem with democracy in Muslim states but you don't mind supporting the regimes in BD which according to the western media itself regularly rigs elections, where persecution is an art.

If you call a functioning democracy repressive what are we to call states like Egypt and BD? Visit these states if you are interested in knowing what repression is! It boggles my mind! How could people be so shameless and devoid of honesty?
