Modi wants to take advantage of every fall in crude prices to mop up more revenues to fund development/subsidy programs elsewhere. Also, this is a temporary measure to repair/strengthen fiscal position of the nation (which was left in doldrums by the previous government) while the crude is still...

It is very easy for any party to go for popular measures. Shouldn't you be happy with this fiscal balancing act by the government even if it is not popular? Besides, 42% of the excise duty goes back to states - not center. So Center, per se, is not the only beneficiary of this hike. Arun...

Prime Minister Narendra Modi with defence personnel on board INS Vikramaditya.

Valid question. Anyway, it's not just about attacks or any hostile intent but also about accidents. That's especially true if the event itself involved fly-by's and other demonstrations (as the pictures above suggest).

    Xinjiang Province: News & Discussions

Just out of curiosity, how about Islamic Republic of Pakistan and where does it "fall on this scale"?

Google's Pichai speaks out for Muslims after Trump's Islamophobia

What? Since when are Muslims a separate race?

India Developing, but still a long way to go

Exactly! I was about to say the same. Metros are the way to go even in our Tier-3 cities now. And Jaipur is not small at all. There will be arguments against any major infrastructure all the time. Jaipur is one of very few cities in India to build infrastructure ahead of its time by Indian...

Japan offers to fund 81% of India's first bullet train worth $15 billion

Well, I didn't know that I was talking to a pedant here. You are right, I don't know where the stoppages are going to be, nobody knows for sure. The point about stoppage at Anand (and Thane) itself was picked up from here. But I think you will probably have more questions on the credibility of...

Japan offers to fund 81% of India's first bullet train worth $15 billion

Geez, calm the eff down. You mentioned something to the effect that Bullet train takes more time than flights, ignoring the fact that Bullet train has an advantage of connecting at the intermediate urban centers unlike the flights without some of the hassles of an air travel! You clearly don't...

Japan offers to fund 81% of India's first bullet train worth $15 billion

Mate, I know very well that HSR is not meant to connect short distances. I just gave examples of urban clusters that could be easily connected with HSR which wouldn't be otherwise served by flights that efficiently.

Japan offers to fund 81% of India's first bullet train worth $15 billion

The HSR connects atleast half a dozen intermediate urban clusters (Thane, Surat, Baroda, Anand etc) with both Mumbai and Ahmedabad. That too, without as many hassles of air travel. No comparison with flights at all even when you consider the slightly duration of the journey and even slightly...

Japan pips China in race to build India's first bullet train.

I don't think there will ever be a separate Mumbai-Delhi HSR Corridor. The same Mumbai-Ahmedabad line would most likely be extended all the way to Delhi.

Delhi & Tokyo may ink pact for India’s first Bullet Train during Shinzo Abe’s visit

Mate, the same cost argument will be made everytime HSR's are going to be built - even 50 years from now. There is a physical limit to the speed the existing rail tracks can support due to bad planning and age of the underlying infrastructure. More importantly, I wouldn't trust the current IR...

Delhi & Tokyo may ink pact for India’s first Bullet Train during Shinzo Abe’s visit

Well, India is a country of Billion+ population. No one mode of transport is ever going to be sufficient. Right now, it may make sense to fly lowcost airlines than to take HSR, but flights are never going to keep up with the projected growth in passenger travel and population explosion in the...

India set to ink defence deals worth more than 1 Lakh Cr (USD 15bn) with Russia

Not very dissimilar to the US offer of F16 Blk 60 to India while supplying the exact same fighters (of course, slightly older blocks) to Pakistan. Same story with Harpoons, C130's and several others.

Wow, this is a new low! Why communalize education and healthcare? Aren't there poor students and poor patients among other religions? Where does this appeasement stop? Of course, that's a rhetorical question. It does stop when "Muslims decide again that they couldn't co-exist with Hindus in a...

India pushes rich countries to boost their climate pledges at Paris

Sometimes on my way to work, I listen to Mr.Rush Limbaugh and I have to say ignorance is bliss! As crazy, ignorant and illiterate the Indian politicians and general populace are, NONE of them go to the extent of disputing the Climate change. In fact, it doesn't take a scientist to tell us...

    A few days in India

This part has to take the cake of all. Does he really mean to say that by "waiting silently for sometime", Pakistan can do to India what China did to Hong Kong? When you enter the GPS co-ordinates of Mumbai and hijack a boat to attack Mumbai, that is not crossing into Indian border by mistake...

Farewell, Sandy Berger, the Clinton Man Who Stopped Armageddon (Kargil)

I don't like how the Americans hog all the limelight while doing NOTHING on the ground especially when it comes to Pakistani indiscretions. If anything, they have only looked the other way after every such Pakistani mischief! It was Pakistanis that intruded into Kargil in the middle of the...
