I don't think they can get past that main node, China effectively filters whats its user can see and what's it user cannot but if there is some kind of encrypted connection , using TOR( which effectively routes different packets through different place) , then I guess the user can get past that...

Using TOR you can hide your identity , but these kind of firewall can't be addressed using because they block it at root level, all of countries' internet line finally meets at a point, and if you block it you can effectively censor things, this is how they operate internet kill switch. BTW...
