Hmm so my guess is...the AMRAAM exploded in proximity...damaging it ...but the aircraft could somewhat compensate bcuz of it's FCS. ...difficult but doable...I remember reading about an F15 that lost a wing...and still managed to land. Requires some great FCS and amazing piloting skills.
