The stories are correct. Tip Sultan displayed two different faces. While for most of the people in the Mysore Kingdom, Tipu showed almost no bigotry, he did display that side in Coorg, coastal Karnataka & Kerala.
He was not as evil as some make him out to be nor is he as good as supporterswould...
Pretending that no caste discrimination exists and showering vitriol at historically discriminated castes is hardly a recipe for success either.
Yup, that is how Lalu got his vote. As long as people are showering abuse against particular castes, you bet no one is about to let go of their caste...
Blacks in the U.S. get affirmative action precisely for these reasons.
Happens. Tough. Not like the system worked brilliantly while the other castes had their day.
In any case, it's attitudes like this that hardens stands. Why are you then surprised that people vote their caste?
You should read my earlier comment. I did point out that marriages are likely to be the exception for quite some time. In any case, no one is talking about the end of caste, just hoping to neutralise it.
If you want. I merely pointed out that as long as social discrimination on caste grounds...
2000-3000 years of discrimination and you are complaining about 68 years?
I have said that what is needed is urbanisation. Your argument is that reservation is the reason for casteism?
Nope. For SC's, both are important & the government should help since there is plenty of social discrimination against them even now. Eventually yes. Not now.
Not so simple. While a lot of OBC reservations are politically driven, reservations for the likes of the SC are difficult to argue against. It is not just about financial backwardness, you can't just erase 1000's of years of social oppression & deprivation overnight.
We need to urbanise, urbanise, urbanise....... as long as we have a substantial number of people in villages, caste can never be sidelined. No matter how hard you try. They will bring their caste biases to the city too but time will grind down many of the biases because the city does not give...
......because they have all been promised all the good stuff many times, the only thing that has remained with them which the politicians haven't taken away is their caste.
Wrong reasoning. Caste is used for politics because it matters to many, not the other way around You are right that vote politics matters more than social cohesion to politicians. True of all politicians & all political parties. Without exception. Some use caste, others use religion.

Jaitley is a very sharp guy but not what was needed for finance. he thinks too much like a lawyer & not much like an economist. His MoS, Jayant Sinha, is very good though I'm not sure he has it in him to be a risk taker. However moving Jaitley is a big decision & I don't know if Modi...
Modi is not an RSS favourite. The story was that the RSS didn't even want to support Modi during the general elections, they were dragged in reluctantly because of the immense pressure coming from the cadre.
Don't know whether the RSS chief made a deliberate comment but if he did, it's not hard...
