ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar on Monday said the country has the capability to set up a space station, but it needed a long-term approach and an ambitious planning.

His comment follows Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) display of technological prowess last week by launching 104 satellites in a single mission.

“We have all the capabilities to set up a space station. The day the country takes the decision, we will ‘ok’ the project. Just draw a policy and provide us necessary funds and time,” Kumar said here.

He was in the city to attend the foundation day ceremony of Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology (RRCAT).

“We still talk about what would be the immediate benefits of a manned space mission. That is why the country hasn’t made up its mind about when to invest in a space station,” he said.

A long-term thinking was needed for setting up a space station, he said, adding “the sooner the better.”

Kumar said ISRO was also mulling tying up with the industry to enhance the country’s satellite launching capability.

Many more satellites were needed to keep a tab on the land and weather conditions and to enhance the communication network, he said.

This would be possible with increase in the number of satellite launches, for which the country needed to enhance the basic infrastructure and reduce the cost of equipment, he added.

The number of companies manufacturing small satellites has gone up across the world, but these companies could not launch them, therefore this area had immense commercial potential and India could tap it by enhancing the launch facilities, the ISRO chief said.

I think they should focus on the sat launch and unmanned exploration... manned mission is risky and there is no urgency... but if we dont grab the space launch market now, space-x will do soon.

Oh man!, made be upset. Now, I'll remain sad for a week or month.
Anyway, launching 10-12 satellites per year will make space infrastructure for ISRO to navigate interterrestial missions and we will not have to use American infrastructure like used in MOM.
But Iranians also working on manned missions. They have plans to send humans in space in next 5 years (yet they will take at least 10 to 15 years) but if ISRO delays mission and Iranians get ahead of us in this field, this would not be good for us for getting behind an inferior player.
If ISRO will not send humans in space till 2025, it will affect the potential of India to get status of a space superpower.
I can't understand why they are delaying this mission.
They have made required rockets, space capsules and space suits. They could launch it in couple of year. Wish BJP government priotize manned mission.

After hardworking of a decade, they have a fruit in their hands.
Postponing the manned mission will be like throwing handy fruit.

Some intellegent person bumped the old thread. Since former chief's remarks back two years ago, program has been revived. Close this useless thread. @waz

Since 2016, Indian Human Spaceflight Program is very much alive.

Funds have been cleared for Space Docking (intended for space station) and Pad Abort tests

Do you wanna bet for $100? :D
You must be retarded then.
I wonder if he still lives lonely and why don't marry ASAP.
@Arsalan may have a message for him.

Indian government won't approve this project. They are simply too nervous of the media and emotional fallout in case the mission fails. On top of that, justifying the $2 Billion spent on a mission with no return will be tough for any government.

I am not gunaa blame the Modi administration. I think the reason for not giving an approval are fair and rational. But I believe that ISRO must keep working on the technologies required for such a mission, incase one day they are given a go ahead.

Indian government won't approve this project.
Read outcome budget 2016 -17 & 2017-18

I fully agree with ISRO!!
I can't understand why you guys opened a 2 years old rumour thread and making ignorant comments.

I know that putting other forums is usually a violation of rule but still I'm putting, my apologies.
