SAPPORO, Japan - The Mainland Chinese men's curling team beat Chinese Taipei 7-3 for their second victory in as many games at the Winter Asian Games here on Sunday.

Tied at 2-2 in the fifth end, China managed their hammer well after the mid-game break, taking one point each in the sixth and seventh to go 4-2 up.

Chinese Taipei earned a point in the eighth, but Mainland China sealed the victory after scoring three points in the ninth and forcing their opponents to give up the last end.

"We didn't play well at the beginning, so the competition once became intense. Actually, we planned to score two points in the ninth, but Chinese Taipei made mistakes, so we scored three," said Xu Xiaoming, the vice-skipper for China.

"We kept calm and we eventually won the match," he said.

Chinese Taipei player Liu Borkai also blamed mistakes for their defeat.

"Never make mistakes when playing against Mainland. A minor fault would let them catch the winning chance," said Liu.

In women's matches in the morning session, South Korea thrashed Qatar 24-2, while Kazakhstan lost to Japan 17-3.

Cross-country skier Man Dandan won the women's 1.4 km individual sprint classical here on Monday, pocketing China's first gold at the eighth Asian Winter Games.

"I was in good form today," said the 28-year-old girl after wining the title in the final round with 3 minutes and 48.29 seconds.

"I didn't think much, but just focused on the games. As a veteran, I want to set a good example for my younger teammates by doing my best regardless of the results," she said.

Mikko Olavi Virtanen, head coach of the Chinese cross-country skiing team, said after the game that he is happy with Man Dandan's performance.

"She is a super talented sprint skier... Her biggest problem before was to maintain the speed for four rounds of the competition. We have been working on that for the past seven months. I have been giving her advice such as how to save the energy till the final round," he said, adding that Man is a good learner.
