ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Pakistan were left embarrassed and in deep shock on Saturday after US authorities refused a visa to the Senate’s deputy chairman, weeks after the new US President Donald Trump announced travel curbs on seven Muslim-majority countries.

Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, the deputy chairman of the upper house, was scheduled to head a two-member delegation to a meeting of the Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The meeting is being held on February 13 and 14.

Senator Lt General (retd) Salahuddin Tirmizi – who was to accompany the deputy chairman – was granted a visa just two days before. However, the visa of Haidri was put on hold in what can be termed a technical refusal, sources said.

Pakistan plays down US commander’s remarks

Official sources told The Express Tribunethat the Senate Secretariat had applied for official visas for the two senators two weeks ago.

They said when the Senate Secretariat checked with the US Embassy about the status of Haidri’s passport through official channels, it was told that the US authorities would get back to it by Tuesday (February 14), clearly meaning that Haidri could not travel to the US to attend the IPU conference.

“It is a technical refusal,” a top Senate official said.

In its official statement earlier in the day, the Senate Secretariat claimed that there was a delay in issuance of visa to the deputy chairman and the Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani had taken notice of the issue.

Rabbani in a prompt reaction issued directives to his secretariat not to entertain any US delegation or diplomat till the issue was resolved.

“No delegation, member of Congress or diplomat of the US will be welcomed by the Senate of Pakistan, Senate Standing Committees and the senators in their official capacity till this issue is resolved,” Rabbani said in a statement issued to media on Saturday morning.

The statement said following the directives of the Senate chairman, the visit has been called off. It said Rabbani had ordered that no Senate delegation would visit the US until its diplomatic mission explained the delay in issuance of a visa to Haidri.

US-Pakistan relations: some inconvenient truths

The US Embassy’s spokesperson, when contacted, said: “We cannot comment on visa cases, due to privacy laws”. Maulana Fazlur Rehman – chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) which is a coalition partner of the ruling party – contacted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and asked him to take up the issue with the US authorities. Haidri is also the JUI-F’s secretary general.

Every year during the fall session of the UN General Assembly the IPU organises a parliamentary hearing to offer an opportunity to parliamentarian to exchange views with UN officials, representatives of the UN diplomatic community, as well as scholars and leading academics.

The meeting is usually opened by the UN secretary-general and the IPU president. Hundreds of parliamentarians from every region of the world participate in it.

Delay in issuing visa to JUI-F senator

Senate chairman says no US delegation, diplomat or Congress member will be welcomed by the Senate of Pakistan till the issue resolved

ISLAMABAD: Taking notice of a delay in issuance of visa to the Deputy Chairman Senate Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri by the US Embassy in Islamabad, Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani on Saturday cancelled the planned visit of senators to the US.

A two-member delegation, comprising Deputy Chairman Senate and PML-N Senator Lt. Gen. (retd) Salahuddin Tirmizi, was scheduled to travel to the US to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Union proceedings at the UN Headquarters in New York on February 13-14.

The move coincides with a US Federal Appeals Court’s judgment refusing to reinstate President Donald Trump’s ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations, which did not include Pakistan.

Rabbani has directed that no Senate delegation will visit the US unless an explanation for the delay in issuance of visa to the deputy chairman Senate is given by the US government/Embassy of the US in Pakistan.

“No delegation, member of Congress or diplomat of the US will be welcomed by the Senate of Pakistan, the Senate standing committees and senators in their official capacity till this issue is resolved,” he asserted.

Haideri has developed good relations with China and has been to the neighbouring country several times along with another party Senator Talha Mehmood.

“It goes without saying that the Chinese authorities know very well how important it is to have good ties with Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s party and other religious parties with regard to CPEC, as JUI-F commands influence both in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” said a JUI-F senator requesting anonymity.

The JUI-F has five senators in the Upper House of Parliament.

However, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency claimed that the US Embassy had issued a visa to Senator Salahuddin Tirmizi without citing reasons for denying visa to Mr. Haideri.

US Embassy spokeswoman Sharlina Hussain Morgan was quoted by the news agency as saying: “We don’t comment on individual visa cases.”

What exactly does he mean when he says 'Not welcome by the Senate' ? Is the Senate chairman that helpless / powerless that he cannot ban visa issuing to the US diplomats in a similar fashion?

Is it customary to apply for visa at the last minute ?

Rabbani has no authority to deny visas to diplomats, US or not. Only the FO can do that. He can ask the government to deny US diplomats or functionaries visas, that's it. But he can deny them access to the Senate or refuse to receive them.

Why is UN head office in US in first place should have alternative office in China or Russia

Solution =blow their embassy with a container full of explosives. If they Are not issuing visa to Pakistanis then for what the fuk is their embassy.
No that's not the solution..kiddo don't get so carried away with anger. india or iran perhaps can do that but Pakistan won't do that and should not do that. The best revenge will be to deny visa to some of their senators and other govt officials who want to visit Pakistan.

I hope this is just simply a misunderstanding, becasue if it is not then its clearly a message from the right-wing American leadership.

Muslims are not welcome.

We should respond to this; stop issuing visas to Americans, and forge closer ties with the rest of the Islamic world. The US doesn't own the world any more.

This will do what exactly? Didn't you know Trump and Putin are buddies now?

His colleague got a visa, so how can you say Muslims are not welcome?

I hope this is just simply a misunderstanding, becasue if it is not then its clearly a message from the right-wing American leadership.

The other guy is a retired general, its much easier to discriminate against civilians than it is to the military establishment.

For what reason would they deny a senate leaders visa to attend a UN meeting?

Why did they not explain or amend this issue as soon as it came up?
