  • The Australian
Pakistani and Chinese spy agencies would be doing all they could to get their hands on leaked documents that reveal the capabilities of India’s new submarine fleet, according to two former high-ranking Pakistani generals.

That was if they didn’t already have the documents, they said.

Former Pakistani army chief Jehangir Karamat said Australia should be “concerned” about using the same French firm, DCNS, to manufacture its subs.

The report in the The Australian this week about a 22,000-page leak containing the specifications of a French-designed sub destined for the Indian Navy has been the lead story on Indian television and on the front pages of its newspapers.

“India assesses vulnerability of Scorpene submarines after a leak of secret data,’’ said the headline on the Hindustan Times, while The Hindu led with a story about the sloppy handling of the highly sensitive documents by DCNS: “Not a tight ship, submarine project leaked like a sieve.”

Indian politicians and defence officials are fuming and are hunting the source of the leak while trying to assess the damage.

“The French-designed subs are so advanced, so silent under water that they are extremely difficult, if not impossible to detect,” said a report on English-language news channel NDTV.

“But according to The Australian, the leak of the 22,000 pages has technical specifications that would make detection possible.”

General Karamat told The Australian the leakwas“mind-boggling’’.

“I can understand Australia’s concern (that the same company is building its subs),’’ said General Karamat, who was previously Pakistan’s ambassador to the US.

“I guess it’s too early to say anything but the report does mention that China and Pakistan would be interested. Indeed, anyone involved in counter measures would be most interested.’’

Retired general Talat Masood, who also served as secretary for defence production in Pakistan’s Defence Ministry, told The Australian the leak was extremely embarrassing to India and France: “The point here is that definitely Pakistan would be interested because India has been expanding its naval fleet and it would very much like to know what are the capabilities of the submarine … this document, to a large extent, would reveal that.”

He said subs were vitally importance in the region. “The Chinese are building the corridor, and so on, and also the Indians want to expand their influence on the seas and the US has been supportive of that,” he said.

On serious note: How damaging it is 4 India? What are the implications of such massive leaks?

Firstly, Pak navy went with the Turkish system for upgrading their french subs. Wise move.

Secondly, Sino-Pak special services will already be in the analysis phase of this leak. But let us also not exaggerate the capabilities of these indian subs also.

Yes, we know anything that india buys or has is out of this world in capabilities...but still let be real here for our sanity.

The question is not the knowledge about the legendary capabilities of these subs..but more about how to capitalise on this both politically, psychologically and of course militarily.

As india is becoming a big troublemaker for both China and Pak...the two iron brothers need to come up with a joint strategy to deter this hegemonic empire of mythology.

All the best in making best out of this leaking indian sub!

Obv i guess every secret agency would love to get their hands on them
@Nilgiri @Mentee remember i told you guys i am a double agent? :butcher::butcher: :D ifynwim
Ok lets make a deal amigo , we got the bucks you got the machli (code-name) :D , @B+ Dracula will meet you at sheikh haseenas palace , shortly, deal? :P

Seriously, so the newspaper states that ISI for last 5 years could not get this information floating around ...

On topic..
  • Scorpenes are useless now.. dud, nude, stripped, full monty !!!!
  • Go near a sea shore, ring a bell and scorpene sub will jump out and get caught in a fishnet..
  • We now know that toilets are there in the submarine, so yes Swachh Bharat campaign is a success..
  • When you next time use radio while travelling in a ship, tune to hear Scorpene communication channel of to and fro messages.
  • Since so much data is out there, a new submarine called Scorpene killer can be made in a short time...
  • We can have DIY kits for building scorpenes too. We will list it in amazon, flipakart and other e-com sites
  • Now we can track Scorpene submarine in Google Maps.. We can use directions tab to find the quickest route as well.
  • Scorpene radiates noise can be now heard from our house directly. Switch the TV on, punch the channel number and voila we can hear its cranking blades.
  • With our toy remote, we should be able to remote control the scorpene submarine. Now thats UnManned Submersible Vehicle or Remote Piloted Submersible Vehicle (RPSV)

I think this explains in a nutshell as per present leak documents.. we will knw more when more leaks are out in open.

you can download it if you know where to look, i wont be suprised if they have it already, the cia dont just go ooooo i want to get the secret docs too.

No You can't. Only a small portion of docs have been released. A slightly larger redacted portion is hinted at and rest in wraps.

@PARIKRAMA - Leak is very serious - I spoke to 5 navy officers through the day (all of them my batchmates in school) and all of whom were despondent.

They said that the technical manual itself is highly protected and provides a huge hint to capabilities of the sub. This being released itself is a travesty and we dont know what else was stolen.

I wonder how you got the information that DM says nothing sensitive is out?

P.S. They were also irritated at how DCNS falsely tried to shift the blame to India in the beginning.

Thankfully France has clarified that nothing damaging was revealed:

India's defense ministry said on Thursday that it saw no immediate security risk and the French government said the information in the documents only showed how the submarines operate and did not compromise their security.

The documents were not classified and at this stage appeared to only focus on how the submarines are operated not how they are built and how or whether they can be detected, the source said.

"The Indians can object to the fact that these documents show the Pakistanis how to maintain their submarines and that's annoying, but it doesn't tell the Pakistanis how to detect an Indian ship, or how we build a submarine in France. Not at all," the source said.
The newspaper published only a fraction of the documents, and these had been redacted, meaning that sensitive details relating to the Scorpene's design and stealth capabilities did not enter the public domain.
"The documents that have been posted ... have been examined and do not pose any security compromise as the vital parameters have been blacked out," an Indian defense ministry statement said.
