Why is India not an OIC member

TIMESOFINDIA.COM | Mar 23, 2022, 17:11 IST
OIC has at various times over the years weighed the prospects of India joining as a member. But it stopped well short of a consensus- the most vociferous opposition, not surprisngly, coming from Pakistan every time.

India was invited to the first OIC summit in 1969, and even addressed the session. But that did not go down well with Pakistan, and it used its influence to keep India out from further sessions.

The matter even came up in 2006, during the Saudi king's India visit. The Saudi team said it would be good if the proposal of India's membership to OIC is introduced by Pakistan.
As expected, Pakistan objected. Any membership aspirant should not have any dispute with an OIC member state, it said in its opposition.

The issue of OIC membership itself seems obfuscated on terms and conditions.

The OIC charter says, only 'consitutionally Islamic' countries that promote the organisation's goals are eligible for membership. Non-Muslim countries too can have observer status, if they fulfill conditions.

Is this some kind of cruel joke?

You guys keep raising Kashmir issues at meeting with OIC without the Indian Muslims perspective. We have 3rd biggest muslim population in the world. Since we stopped back channel talks, this could a avenue for bilateral peace talks. I believe sovereign countries should be able to resolve their issues through talks and organizations like OIC should have a role to play.

No talks or ties with India until you leave Kashmir.

Then don't raise the issue in UN, OIC and other forums if you want the status quo.

When Israel becomes the member than India will have a reason to cry. meanwhile be happy to a guest member once in a while.
Pakistan wants China to be given observer status. Is OIC ok with ughurs being mistreated? Or is just to butter up China for their investment?

Why should India be included in the first place? Why would India even have an interest in joining an organization for Muslims? Some weird fetish you guys have!
