Mostly to send a loud and clear message to the people in the White house that were seeking tension and regime change in Iran that Iran would not hesitate a moment to respond to any aggressive behavior of them in the same manner ... a show of power that we are ready to fight back ... so think twice next time that's why Iran didn't hit P8 ...
Could have easily taken control over the drone loud and clear like they always say out loud about that ability.
not exactly , if you study more about RQ-170 capture you realize it was not a momentary decision , it was planned for several month and the plan was monitored for sometime before the order to do it come.
it was not the case of RQ-4 . for RQ-4 order was to shoot anything that enter Iranian airspace and there was no several month of planning
So it requires months of planning to take over a drone?

Because RQ-170 penetrated tens of kilometers deep into the Iranian airspace from the east near a sand desert that made it possible for us to land it without damage and recover it nearly intact. We couldn't have done the same in the south. But we did hack into your drones and force them to land again, particularly in Syria and Iraq:

Wait a minute...you can only hijack drones deep in Iran or in Syria and Iraq but not a few kilometers from Iran? That what you saying?

We can land them on soft sand in the middle of desert, not on asphalt in civilian areas, rocks in mountains or seawater.

Well we have enough of American drones in our collection, this time we wanted to demonstrate our capability of hitting them directly by our ADs which was successful ...
The point is uninvited birds in our airspace either would be shot down or brought down ...
