You know that the actual living standard of a average Pakistani compared to Indian is slightly better. Extreme poverty is certainly lower in Pakistan. A quick look at some street walks on Youtube blows the image of 'Shining India'. It's mostly a filthy, dirty, slumy hell full of really ugly and uncivilized aboriginal knock offs walking around half naked. Most of us can't go to India but you easily go to Youtube and do a random search of street walks and see India for what it is.

Contrast that with most of our cities [excluding Karachi for obvious reasons] and our countryside is far better.

However be that as it may there is extreme reason to be concerned. The gap used to be huge 30 years ago. Now it is reduced. India is growing faster then Pakistan and so is Bangla.

The reason we are at a better place is first historicaly we were a more equitable land. We may not have had billionaires but neither did we have million homeless. Secondly we have exported a greater % of our population abroad which mean't large amounts of remittances. It is known fact that one worker abroad can lift 10 people back in the home country out of poverty.

Hoewever where Pakistan has failed is building up a export economy. And if this is not fixed India and Bangla will overtake Pakistan.
Pakistan and India both have lower HDIs than Palestine, even below that of Gaza.

The last 20 years has seen almost end to end economic mismanagement, financial lack of prudence, and an endemic lack of reforms that everyone from the government itself, to the IMF, to institutions like the BIS, all advocate for.

The problems we face holding back growth are as follows:
  1. Low savings rate, it’s still not even double digits last I checked. The lower the rate, the lower the level of investment, the lower the growth.
  2. Low tax revenues. Fiscal policy contrary to popular belief, is not simple at all. We need to simultaneously boost capital expenditure (minimising debt servicing and other non productive uses), while also increasing the tax to GDP ratio to at least 15%.
  3. Trade deficits. These bleed our forex reserves, put downward pressure on both growth. Ultimately, even sustainable deficits are not the best we could be doing.
However, more recently we’ve seen actual attempts to deal with the 3rd issue, with good progress, and some work towards the 2nd. This current government has been largely successful in boosting forex reserves from crisis levels. And managing the trade balance (minus the distortion due to covid). What’s also needed now is for the government to implement the financial reforms it announced a few years ago. This will help us formalise deposits, invest in sectors other than real estate since a lot of our investments just sink and die here.

If we evaluate where we were in 2017 on these three points and where we are now, filtering for covid. I’d say the progress has been good, but the delay before we feel the positive effects will be substantial. Let’s evaluate again in 2023... I’d say we’re on the right path. This government has been a bit lacklustre over all, but still a lot better than some of the short sighted lunacy that preceded it.

I heard a phrase sometime ago on one of those political programmes. I think it was Dr,Moeed Pirzada. No idea if it is Urdu or Punjabi but it was "leer fakeer". I understand it means somebody ho has his head so stuck in book that he can't see what is happening around his a*rse. No idea if that is correct rendition of this. But you get my point.

If a plane goes into negative G and begins a straight down descent from 5 miles altitude and his passengers are stuck to the ceiling. Screaming they can see the ground approaching fast.

The captain with calm voice says "ladies and gents everything is cool my readings are 25,000 altitude with steady north-west direction heading and winds in our tail so we should arrive in Las Vegas by 3:30 pm sharp".
I suppose you would be one of the pasengers who would say "cool"?

I went to Pakistan last year. I went from Peshawar to Lahore, from Islamabad to Thakot, from Lahore to Faisalabad and everything in between. I also had to go to Karachi. So I can't say I saw all the country but I did see good chunk of it. Nothing that I saw remotely resembled or even tallied with the fcuked up numbers I read provided by WB, IMF and rest of the number cruncher.

Almost the entire country is on the fiddle. Not one of the restaurents, shops, hotels I used were on the books leave alone pay a dime of tax. The house I stayed in Islamabad is owned by a family member who lives in USA. They have a left the house in care of fellow clan member from our village. They trust him to take care of the house and he in return gets to live there for free. When I went to Islamabad he hosted me and in fact acted as my batman. He took care of all the chores. He was there 24/7 for me and what I could not understand was how did he make a living? Well it transpired he was employed by PWD as foreman which he had got on sifarish. All he did was reported to the PWD office once in a while. The PWD EXO was brother of the chap in USA.

The crazy thing was he considered himself too good to do chores like cleaning and cooking. For this he pulled out another guy from the PWD team. My batman had a car and drove me all over Islamabad. I kept complaining about his 'banger'? A Toyota Corrollo 2008. This really rankled him. Before I left I gave him Rs2 lakh and the cook/cleaner Rs1 lakh.

Just before Pakistan went into red list I had booked a ticket and my 'batman' found out I was coming. He excitedly sent me a picture of his new car - a Toyota Corolla 2014. I know they cost fair bit in Pakistan and he was excited about showing his new wheels. Saying he was looking forward to driving me around ISB.

I have been to Pakistan over the years. First time was in 1989. I hated it. But the country has come up by leaps and bounds. I can honestly say I love going to Pakistan now. After Pakistan last year I went to Crete, Greece and Istanbul, Turkey. I can say I enjoyed Pakistan more.

There is life everywhere. Restaurents serving delicious food and the fabilous new road networks being built just appeal to a petrolhead like me. When this fcukin cornoa bullshat ends I can't wait to go. This time I am eagerly waiting for the M-14 being built to drive south to Mianwali and DG Khan.

In summary what my eyes saw did NOT even remotelt tally with the figures you hear cited for Pakistan. My batman was on salary of Rs30k a month. Do you think he declared his real income? Nope. Just like him most of the country is on the take.

I do however accept places in Sindh, Thar Parker are really poverty stricken and including some parts of Balochistan. My heart goes to them. Rest of the country are fat turds eating too rich food and heading for heart attacks.
Lets go together or meet up.

still awaiting source for your info again not cheap indian links but IMF/WB for 2021 data for Pakistan as you farted earlier as well

true this is what i always thought of too, i think the only thing Haseena learn from indians is how to forge GDP numbers. or else if a country GDP or per capita increased it effects sales of every thing very quicky which i have never seen in Bangladesh despite they are growing on papers very fast since last 1.5 decades and its only indians who dance like monkeys to compare Bangladesh with Pakistan while India with China:omghaha::omghaha::omghaha:
In BD, the sales volume of the luxury items remain stagnant!

Whatever profit is earned is laundered immediately!! BD is the top 5 countries in the highest level corruption!! All the politicians, civil/military officials etc. are 100% into whole same corruption and money laundering in all possible means...

On top of it the Indians, working as high paying exports in every fields including as floor managers in the garments factories, remit $10b out of BD every year....

I mean, from looks alone, Palestine seems far more developed than India and Pakistan despite decades of Israeli attacks.
Does it? No drinkable water, no healthcare, no schools, no power, no economy, no trade, 56% of the population lives below the poverty line, a 43% unemployment rate, 80% of the population is aid dependent, no access to basic services, squalor, widely accepted as an open-air prison, declared unlivable, no rights to their own land, no guarantee of sanctity of life, no access to basic human rights, unable to travel between own lands, draconian apartheid law, walled in, stateless, and living under one of the most brutal foreign occupations in modern history. Like I said, clearly an accurate estimation and in no way a setup to undermine the Palestinian plight.

The point is why there is no rebase of GDP done, this was going on for the last many years.

The last calculation of real GDP was done like 15 years ago, now thousands of more companies are registered and under the tax net, earlier even big conglomerate like engro was not into the rebase. Now things are improving and changed.

Any new calculation of GDP will results in exponentially high real GDP figure.

And in PPP GDP, Pakistan is still much ahead of BD.
Strangely, whenever a major catastrophe occurs Pak somehow ends up managing it!! Some examples: a couple of invasions in Afganistan by the Super Powers with the ultimate objective to finish off Pak; check mating ever increasing Indian military might including nukes, missiles, advanced jets, naval platforms etc; floods and earthquakes in 2000s; WOT; rule by the Mafia proxy traitor terrorists to kill Pak from inside; COVID etc...

My question is with a economy in shambles how Pak manages it?!?!

Now, compare it with BD. Burma has a free run over her militarily. COVID has destroyed the livelihood of millions. Finances are stagnant for the middle class. Upper middle class and rich are limited by only 4K new car and 10K new housing units sales per year; and, they never grow....

You are correct...Pakistan's economy has god given bateni characteristics...all this talk about the murtad Bangladeshis surpassing Islamic thekadar ghawza e hind republic of pakistan is just yahudi nasara(and now hindutva) conspiracy...lets ignore the fact that Bangladeshis have to pay 300-400% taxes on motorvehicles...10-15% on property transfer(highest in asia)...land prices increased a 100000%(yes a hundred thousand percent) in 40 years.
As for Burma...we are hosting a million refugees atva cost of 1.2 bn$ a year.
Cost of Supporting Rohingyas: Dhaka now saddled with $1.2b a year
We can see what your definition of managing it is from the following report.
War on terror left half a million dead in 17 years, says report

The difference between you and us is we see these as our failures...and you see your failures as some hidden success.

It all shows how poor the common BD folks are!! BD is one of the top most corrupt countries for a reason....

By the by, is manually peddling the rickshaws the primary source of the income for tons of folks???

Do folks still go to India for a simple x-ray??

Do the Indian/SL experts still manage your garments factory floors as managers???

Are you still being ruled by the Hindus and their supporters? Do they still occupy more than 50% of the top official positions in all departments???

Will your internationally acknowledged corrupt-to-the-core military, run by your NSA’s wife, be able to fire a single shot from a single air gun even if the Burmese Army marches up to Dhaka?? Or, will the soldiers again get indulged in killing the officers and raping their wives and daughters as they usually do during the time of crises???
