KOLKATA: Shahid Afridi scored just 314 runs and took 24 wickets in 29 matches last year but Misbahul Haq admitted the former captain’s absence was being felt in the middle, especially as Misbah looked around for options during the MS Dhoni onslaught in Chennai.
Afridi hit just two half-centuries in the year and took a solitary five-wicket haul – against Afghanistan in February – and was subsequently dumped from the ODI squad. Misbah, though, hoped for his quick return, confirming that the allrounder still has a lot left in the tank.
“Every player goes through a period where, despite his class and talent, he is unable to perform at his usual level or perform according to expectations,” said Misbah, ahead of the second ODI in Kolkata.
“We also want Afridi back in the team but it has to be at the right time and when he has regained his confidence as well as form. He’s not out of the team forever. He’s an asset for Pakistan and has a lot of cricket left in him.”
Afridi is Pakistan’s third-highest wicket-taker in ODIs (346 wickets in 344 matches) and, despite making his debut as a leg-spinner who could bat, is sixth in the list of all-time most run-scorers for the country with 7,038 runs.
His stand-out show in 2011 – when he also led Pakistan to the World Cup semi-finals – elevated the level of expectations from the allrounder as he scored over 500 runs and took 46 wickets in 30 matches. And it’s his knack of breaking partnerships is what Misbah is currently missing.
“Afridi’s been part of the team for a very long time and it’s his wicket-taking ability in the middle of the innings that we miss the most.
“We need his bowling more right now and that’s where his form has dipped considerably. Now we have to rely on the current group of bowlers to do the job for us until Afridi’s back in the team.”
Pakistan’s next limited-overs series starts on March 1 with the first Twenty20 against South Africa.

No, his time is over. He shows no maturity on the field, swings his bat like he is playing "gali mohalla" cricket and has a tendency to bite things. Give youngsters a chance now. Already we have seen Junaid Khan and Nasir Jamshed perform brilliantly in this tour. When more useless oldies go out, there will be more space for fresh talent to come in.

shahid has an average of 23 per innings, misbah has an average of 42 per innings with a strike rate of 75 which is at second after nasir jamshed.
Misbah is way better than afridi.

imagine if afridi playing in place of malik, then afridi will score 5 runs compared to malik 25.
then afridi has to bowl all his bowlers and hafeez could not bowled his 10, then what??
afridi could give 60 runs in his over with 0 wicket.
Afridi manages to play 350 odis which i cant understand.
he still not serious and want to become a captain. JOKER.
he only remains in the team due media and sponsorship, if board need sponsors due to him then they should include him in the squad but does not need to play him.

Misbah and afridi and akmal brothers should be out of team
    Misbah is older than umpires
Plz give young promising cricketer chance so we can see bright future

list of averages and strike are here.
    nasir 47avg, 95% strike rate.
afridi 23 avg, strike rate 100.
    younis 33, 70%
    misbah 42, 75 %
    akmal 38, 78%
    kamran 27, 76%
    malik 33, 74%
    hafeez 27, 70%
    azhar 44, 69%

    Now look who is better.

you dont have player like misbah at the moment, misbah has the high average per inning score compared to others, if want a proof go check in cricinfo.com
Pakistan first should get a better player than him and then kick him out.

Afridi also have attitude problem..I personally prefer razzaq over afridi as a all rounder..razaq batting average is better and he actually played vital role in crucial time. shoib is not bad either. we need someone who can bat for team if middle order collapse

Misbah may have good average but its been long time since i have seen him performing for the team. he hardly play match winning inning

misbah has only six or seven months left so plz give him so that we can make our team more stronger and give chance to haris sohail.

i agree in a way that razzaq has better batting avg plus he is more consistent and reliable but he is misfit due to his slow moving in the field giving too many runs in the field and his bowling is not good too recently.
Why he is misfit because we already have 5 bowlers plus shoaib malik which is sixth one.
we dont need allrounders now, we need a batsmen which should be aggressive plus having high average.
i think umar akmal can do that but he is match fixer and some attitude problem plus he is still following kamran akmal orders of doing politics.
there is/was a grouping in the team which is led by afridi and akmal brothers. Board had managed this grouping very smartly, this grouping debacle led pakistan to loose in 20 20 world cup in srilanka.
I think pakistan should try Haris sohail which is very good after looking at his stats of first class cricket.

Move on Misbah and worry more about your own position in the team.

Give some youngsters a chance to prove themselves.

Yes we should look for some young batsman just like nasir jamshed..thats the only weakness in pakistani team,..one or two good batsman then it will be a perfect team..you cannot rely on akmal brothers and misbah..we will see how misbah perform in south africa ..he got failed in india..i am not hopeful about him..he also lack passion

Misbah should be out of the team as well. He's already aged and we all know he doesn't quite perform as he should.

Azhar Ali (parchi) shall be out and Afridi shall be in.

He perform quite well. His strike rate and average is far good.

He is perhpas best of Pakistani batsmen.
