US renews sanctions against Iran

WASHINGTON: (APP) President Barack Obama allowed US sanctions against Iran to be renewed on Thursday, but in a surprise move declined to actually sign the legislation that brings the sanctions into force.

“The extension of the Iran Sanctions Act is becoming law without the president’s signature,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement.

Iran-US Economic Relations in post sanctions era

The president, who had previously been expected to sign the measure, symbolically let slide a midnight deadline to ink his name on the legislation — which he has called unnecessary — meaning the 10-year sanctions renewal will automatically become law.

Under the Iran nuclear deal signed in July 2015, world powers agreed to lift international sanctions in exchange for curbs to Iran’s nuclear program.

Obama has said that passage of the US sanctions renewal would make no difference to the agreement because the White House will continue to suspend all the sanctions linked to Iran’s nuclear program.

The language in the nuclear agreement makes it unclear whether renewing the sanctions — and keeping the nuclear ones suspended — amounts to a violation.

“This administration has made clear that an extension of the Iran Sanctions Act, while unnecessary, is entirely consistent with our commitments in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” Earnest said, referring to the nuclear deal by its formal name.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday ordered the country’s scientists to start work on nuclear-powered ships in response to the expected renewal of sanctions, criticizing the US move as a breach of the nuclear accord.

International analysts said the announcement was likely just a bluff, since it would be an extremely costly effort for little strategic gain.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Thursday that continued implementation of the Iran nuclear deal remained “a top strategic objective” for the United States.

Kerry echoed the White House’s assertion that the legislation was unnecessary, stating that with or without the renewed sanctions, the United States would still be able to address any Iranian breach of the nuclear deal or snap back sanctions should Iran fall short of its commitments.

“The administration has, and continues to use, all of the necessary authorities to waive the relevant sanctions, to enforce those that are outside the scope of the JCPOA, and to re-impose sanctions if necessary in the event that Iran should fail to perform its commitments under the JCPOA,” Kerry said in a statement.

Iran again been outsmarted by USA. Iran, what a great country, great civilization, great resources all being wasted at the alter of the incompetent mullahs. Whatever respect I had for the mullahs has slowly ebbed away. This is bad news for the region and bad news for Pakistan.

Problem with Iranians is that they think they are white people.

Not in million years my Iranian friends. I guess I have met too many in US with strange thoughts.

what will be Iran's reaction? Will they start uranium enrichment at faster pace? Where is China, Russia and other parties of nuclear agreement? Are they supporting these sanctions?

Death to America , doesn't mean please don't sanction us. death to America means: stop supporting israel
I am just curious ...... how does it matter if the US supports or does not support Israel ?

Your destiny is independent of Israel, so why do you insist of compromising on your own national interest by making it slave to another nation ?

For the simple reason that Usrael is behind these over 30 years sanctions, for them Iran had to stop its peaceful civilian nuclear program or get bombed by Usrael, who in fact wished the US will do it for them, they even have threatened to nuke Iran and make 20 000 000 causalities if they deem it necessary in their perception of things.. the US responded with a deal with Iran that Usrael is trying to sabotage through US congress by saying that the Iranian program and rhetoric scares them!

What other choice the Iranians had? do you remember why the revolution started against the Shah?
The Shah also asked the US for a civilian and military nuclear program which was refused by the US, while having Iran as the "Gendarme" of the middle east to face Nuclear Soviet Union on its own during the cold war without any nuclear deterrent! The F-14s were bought to stop Soviet Mig 25 very frequent incursions in Iranian airspace.. there was obvious danger for Iran, and the US wouldn't respond to that eventhough Iran was not party to NATO and did not benefit from its nuclear umbrella.. There are also other social causes.. but the main hidden cause was the security of Iran that was facing a great danger from the Soviets by being a very close ally to their main enemy the US and Europe who in fact were NATO..

You've got it the wrong way around. The US is a slave of Israel.
