According to the Associated Press, to meet the required budget cuts, the Army wants to halt production of its M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks, which are the centerpiece of its force structure.

Since General Dynamics is the only U.S. company that builds main battle tanks, a shutdown of the Abrams production line would dramatically alter the tank industrial base and make it all but impossible to restart production quickly to meet an emergency".

there isn't a "production line" per se. US hasn't built an M1 for a while, the old M1 chassis' are recycled and new gun systems/turrets, electronics and powerplants are installed.
