Getting a working nuclear fusion reactor to reality seems to have a bigger chance of success compared to this concept SST turning into reality... :disagree:

Erm that experiment happened with us many decades ago.
It was called Concorde.


It wasn't commercially viable, but amazing and one of the marvels of British engineering.

It will use Rolls Royce engines. :D

They are talking about 5,000 US dollars for London to New York return and so similar to business class flights and much cheaper than Concorde ever was. Can really see a market there for business class passengers and those with that need to tick off a "bucket list" trip from their itinerary.

I think the biggest problem with this plane would be its relatively short 5000 mile range as that would not be enough for trans-Pacific flights between Asia and North America. Once they have a longer range version that can do these flights then I can see much higher demand and potential greater economies of scale for supersonic jetliners.

I wouldn't call a commercial passenger aircraft 'BOOM'. I look forward to flying United BOOM to shuttle back and forth between residences in US and Europe. 4 hrs to London is sweet...
It used to be 2hrs on Concorde - maybe soon - the Americans will catchup with what the Brits ( and a small contribution from the French ... ) achieved in 1969 .. 8-):p: ..

Yeah, unfortunately Boom is not leveraging NASA's X-59 low sonic boom tech. So this is not a great announcement by United.


QueSST is probably a nod to the awesome Johnny Quest supersonic jet

CHICAGO and DENVER– June 3, 2021- United Airlines today announced a commercial agreement with Denver-based aerospace company Boom Supersonic to add aircraft to its global fleet as well as a cooperative sustainability initiative – a move that facilitates a leap forward in returning supersonic speeds to aviation.

Under the terms of the agreement, United will purchase 15 of Boom’s ‘Overture’ airliners, once Overture meets United’s demanding safety, operating and sustainability requirements, with an option for an additional 35 aircraft. The companies will work together on meeting those requirements before delivery. Once operational, Overture is expected to be the first large commercial aircraft to be net-zero carbon from day one, optimized to run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It is slated to roll out in 2025, fly in 2026 and expected to carry passengers by 2029. United and Boom will also work together to accelerate production of greater supplies of SAF.

“United continues on its trajectory to build a more innovative, sustainable airline and today’s advancements in technology are making it more viable for that to include supersonic planes. Boom’s vision for the future of commercial aviation, combined with the industry’s most robust route network in the world, will give business and leisure travelers access to a stellar flight experience,” United CEO Scott Kirby said. “Our mission has always been about connecting people and now working with Boom, we’ll be able to do that on an even greater scale.”

Capable of flying at speeds of Mach 1.7 – twice the speed of today’s fastest airliners – Overture can connect more than 500 destinations in nearly half the time. Among the many future potential routes for United are Newark to London in just three and a half hours, Newark to Frankfurt in four hours and San Francisco to Tokyo in just six hours. Overture will also be designed with features such as in-seat entertainment screens, ample personal space, and contactless technology. Working with Boom is another component of United’s strategy to invest in innovative technologies that will build a more sustainable future of air travel.

it was three hrs actually 2 hrs 52 minutes. Concorde sized experimental Valkyrie XB70 which first flew in 1964 was much much faster..

Actually that's a big misconception, BA actually did make money on it after they conducted a survey and realized people would pay more, then they raised prices to match that and did make money on it. AF is a different story.
At it's peak 25% of BA's profits were coming from a fleet of 7 concordes
Another thing, Concorde came when East Asia was poor if it came now It wouldn't be suprising to see it zipping around on routes like Shanghai - Seoul, HK- Singapore, Taipei- Tokyo and others, all over oceans and supersonic

High cost, safety, noise pollution.... Are customers willing to pay a premium for a seat?
I would, if cost is not ridiculously expensive relative to average ticket.

US airlines are trying to squeeze as many ppl possible inside a plane. With Economy and premiums economy kinda BS. Air travel is pain in the *** nowadays.
