Russia has still not granted the Ukrainian consul access to Ukrainian journalist Roman Suschenko arrested in Russia, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said.

"Russia is again failing to provide such access. We are trying to get it and we are hoping that it will happen in the very near future," Klimkin said during a session where the government was asked questions on Friday.

The minister said "Russia is trying to frame Roman Suschenko."

The foreign minister said that in this situation there is a need for a coordinated position in the context of pressure from the international community, the mass media and non-governmental organizations to improve the situation with the Ukrainian citizens detained and arrested in Russia.

According to earlier reports, Ukrainian journalist Roman Suschenko was detained in Moscow for an alleged "spy action." The Moscow Lefortovo Court on October 1 arrested him for two months on espionage charges. Kyiv called the journalist's detention a provocation and said the espionage accusations are far-fetched.

Roman Sushchenko was detained in Moscow on September 30

Russian authorities have officially charged with espionage Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, his lawyer Mark Feygin told Russian TASS news agency on Friday.

A Moscow court had earlier authorized Sushchenko's detention until November 30.

Sushchenko, a correspondent of the Ukrinform news agency, was detained in Russian capital on September 30 on suspicion of collecting classified information about Russian army.

The journalist, who came to Moscow to visit his relatives, pleaded not guilty.

Ukrainian consul has not been allowed to visit Sushchenko since he was arrested.

Feygin said on Twitter that he would be able to see his client on Monday, October 10.

This is the first time Russia charged a Ukrainian journalist with spying.

Ukrainian consul gains access to Sushchenko at Lefortovo prison
KYIV. Oct 10 (Interfax) - A Ukrainian consul met with the journalist Roman Sushchenko, who Russia claims is a Ukrainian intelligence colonel, at the Lefortovo detention facility in Moscow on Monday.

"Our information is that the Ukrainian consul has met with Roman Sushchenko," Mykhailo Chaplyga, a spokesman for Ukrainian ombudsman Valeria Lutkovska, told Interfax on Monday evening, adding that he received this information from the office of Russian ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova.

On October 3, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said that its officers in Moscow "arrested Col. Roman Sushchenko, an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, during a spy operation." The FSB opened a criminal case under Article 276 (espionage) of the Russian Criminal Code, an inquiry is underway.

The Lefortovo court in Moscow placed Sushchenko under a two-month arrest. His defense team has appealed against the arrest.

On October 7, it emerged that Russian investigators had charged Sushchenko with espionage.

Kyiv called the arrest a provocation on trumped-up espionage charges.
