Best News I have heard all year! Now is the time for Bangladeshi Pharma companies to move ahead with production of all the vaccines, Biontech, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson etc. Whichever appropriate.

In an effort to close the horrific vaccine disparity between wealthy countries and the developing world, the Biden administration announced that it supports waiving intellectual-property protections for coronavirus vaccines.

“This is a global health crisis, and the extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic call for extraordinary measures,” wrote United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai in a statement. “The Administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for COVID-19 vaccines.”

The announcement comes as leading nations from the World Trade Organization have pushed members to come to an agreement on how to lift protections on the intellectual property behind the coronavirus vaccine candidates. A temporary suspension of these protections would make it easier for developing nations to produce their own vaccines, rather than be forced to wait in line behind wealthy nations to purchase them. While the U.S. has provided India — which is facing hundreds of thousands of coronavirus cases every day — with vaccine materials and around 60 million doses over the past few weeks, the decision to support the IP suspension is the largest signal to date of American cooperation in the global vaccination effort.

Leaders from South Africa and India, as well as many Democrats in Congress, have lobbied the Biden administration to support such a waiver.

To help get the agreement over the line at the World Trade Organization, the U.S. will now be part of the negotiations over its text, and will pressure other countries to back it. Because the WTO makes its decisions by consensus, all 164 member nations must agree on the measure. “In terms of how soon the WTO can deliver — that literally depends on the WTO members, collectively, being able to deliver, and so I am the first one to admit that what we are leaning into is a process that is not going to be easy,” Tai added. Activists and epidemiologists who have pushed for such an action are also encouraging the WTO to include a process known as tech transfer, in which “patent holders supply technical know-how and personnel,” as the New York Times explains.

On the news that many countries could soon make doses locally, the shares of several companies producing the vaccine fell sharply: Moderna dropped close to 10 points, Germany’s BioNTech fell as much as 8.9 percent, and Novovax fell as much as 11 percent.

I highly doubt it will come to pass, if the yanks cannot subsidize insulin (keep in mind not everyone suffers from diabetes) and are killing their own people just for big pharma to make huge gains so that they in turn can cushion their own wallets, what makes anyone believe they would do the same when the potential customer base is quadrupled?

October 2020.

We feel a special obligation under the current circumstances to use our resources to bring this pandemic to an end as quickly as possible. Accordingly, while the pandemic continues, Moderna will not enforce our COVID-19 related patents against those making vaccines intended to combat the pandemic. Further, to eliminate any perceived IP barriers to vaccine development during the pandemic period, upon request we are also willing to license our intellectual property for COVID-19 vaccines to others for the post pandemic period.

Moderna is proud that its mRNA technology is poised to be used to help end the current pandemic.

I don't know man, I'll believe it when I see it happen. I'm too disillusioned by human nature to believe that people will put humanity over profits.

President Biden like President Obama has more and more humane qualities comparing to Trump. I believe something great will be done by the new US President that will save the human race from becoming extinct from this Earth.

US, along with UK, have been the two most generous developed countries in helping the poorer countries to fight the pandemic.

UK has licensed its AstraZeneca vaccine with zero profit to other countries like India to produce hundreds of millions of doses for itself and other 3rd world countries. It also has given the most amount of money to Covax, which provideds free vaccines to the most poorest countries.

USA has already freely licenced one of its ventilators for any other company in the world to produce, started giving away 60 million AstraZeneca vaccines it does not need and now this patent waiver for its excellent vaccines.

Both the UK and USA can be proud of being forces for good in the world during this pandemic.

Yes the US and the UK are helping while simultaneously dealing with its own crisis.

But I hope Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and other nations with a high population density learns from India. It isn’t vaccines, oxygen or drug shortage that is killing Indians.
It is the lack of leadership and effective crisis management.

Imagine if the Indian government assigned resources to track and update the status of hospital beds, medical personnel and supplies like oxygen and drugs in real time and then made this information public on a google map. Thousands wouldn’t be dying on the streets searching for hospital beds and oxygen. And many more wouldn’t be risking their lives searching for hospital beds and supplies for their critically ill friends and family.

Combine this with improved and streamlined logistics thousands of lives could have been saved And millions more wouldn’t have to risk exposing themselves to the virus in search of timely medical intervention.

I do appreciate the work China did early on in the pandemic, contact tracing, using the power of digital technology and real-time data to organize themselves more effectively.
Sure, I will call them out for their brutal and often excessive use of force in the management of this crisis and I will also call out the thousands of lower cadres CPC workers that profiteered from extorting helpless citizens during the lockdown. But I will begrudgingly accept they did good work.

India is led by a psychopath called Modi whose claim to fame before he became PM of India was to preside over the slaughter of 2000 Muslims in Gujarat where he was Chief Minister of that state.

BD is led by someone who understands that this virus must never be allowed to run out of control while vulnerable people are not vaccinated at least.

BD follows SOPs as and when required and so a different country than India.
Pakistan is more similar to BD than to India in its handling of the pandemic.

@UKBengali bhai, it looks more and more probable that India will have a third wave of Covid, which may turn out to be even worse than the second one right now. This is what I'm seeing in the world news media as all signs point that way.

Modi is totally clueless on how to control this and is waiting for religious deities to intervene and ride this out.

Your opinion.
