Regarded as Turkey's "troops in the sky" and offered to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) for use, kamikaze drones have drawn the attention of the world defense market. The first export of these drones is expected to be achieved this year. Speaking at Turkey's first show-based aviation exhibition the Eurasia Airshow, held under the auspicious of the presidency, Defense Technologies and Engineering Inc. (STM) General Manager Davut Yılmaz, with regard to the works on kamikaze drones, recalled that they unveiled autonomous tactical striking fixed-wing drone ALPAGU and autonomous rotating-wing striking drone KARGU about a year ago, stressing that these products have been reinforced in terms of both ammunition and platform. He announced that they introduced ALPAGU Block II, an autonomous tactical striking fixed-wing drone improved and enlarged compared to its first model, autonomous rotating-wing strike drone KARGU and ALPAGU Block II multi-launch system at the Eurasia Airshow. Yılmaz underlined that when the aforementioned products are completed, they will serve as an important force in the country's defense.

Referring to the international interest in kamikaze drones, Yılmaz said since these are very new concepts in the world with very few countries to manufacture them, there is serious demand from a wide range of countries from the Middle East, Africa and South Asia and some European countries.

"We are a bit cautious because we do not want to share them without reaching a certain level of maturity, especially in the fixed and rotating wings. Our priority is always the TSK. We have matured both products with the feedback we received from the TSK, making it more perfect," Yılmaz continued. "Therefore, when these products reach a certain level of maturity - we can say that the rotating-wing drone KARGU is now finished in every sense - I think they will be exported this year. Fixed-wing ALPAGU will most likely start exports from the beginning of next year."."

  • Swarm attack and deep learning algorithms are being developed by STM. Kamikaze drones will have swarm attack modes.

Kargu rotary wing attack drone

Alpagu Block-II

  • A strategic Anti-Radiation and Land Attack Drone called “KARGI” is being developed by Vestel Savunma. Development commenced in 2015. Sensors, Rf seeker, optics are being developed by Aselsan. Kargi will be an equivalent of Israeli Harop to replace Turkish Harpy-1 drones ordered in 2002. Kargi will have a range of 1000+km. Tens of Kargi with swarm attack mode flying over SAM protected enemy territory will be a serious nightmare of enemy radars before Airforce join into strikes.

Aselsan “Atmaca” EO developed for Kargi anti-radiation drone.
Atmaca gimbal weight: 10kg

  • Turkish Anti-Radiation Missile project called “Akbaba” is also under development phase in Roketsan. The development steps are kept secret but It is known that Aselsan is developing a Ku Band active/passive mode seeker head with Phased array antenna and AESA radar infrastructure. Akbaba is going to replace US made AGM-88A/B Harm anti radiation missiles in inventory.

SPEWS-II Aircrafts Electronic Warfare Self Protection system is developed by Aselsan/Mikes/BAE. BAE system provided know-how to some aspects, especially for Missile Warning System but Domestification efforts have being applied and the UV blind image intensifiers have been developed which is the core of MWR systems.

An image of Aselsan developed UV blind image intensifier

SPEWS-2 system have been tested on F-16 Block 50 against different type of ground/air and air/air threat scenarios which is created by Havelsan developed EHTES where system itself stationed in Konya training center. During 40h test with 3 different F-16 with 5 different pilots, Spews-2 provided very good results with precision threat tracking/classification/jamming in correct timing to protect the related fighters.

An image during trials held in 2017.

Aselsan is developing a fully domestic aircraft electronic warfare systems/sensors based on Spews-2. The new system will be applied for Hurjet CAS and TF-X air superiority fighters. In this league, Turkey is among a few state which is able to provide own ew self protection solutions for own fighter projects.

Turkey's indegeneous combat and non-combat Bayraktar drones, which have significantly contributed to the Turkish military's success in its operations against terrorism, will be equipped more effective systems

"...

The company will showcase the Bayraktar Tactical Block 2 (TB2) at the Efes 2018 Live Fire Military Drills (Efes-2018) to be held in Izmir's Seferihisar district. Along with the administration of the Aegean Army Command, friendly and allied countries will take part in the event, which is being hosted by Turkey.

Baykar General Manager Haluk Bayraktar said that three Bayraktar TB2 armed drones will perform in the drill. Bayraktar stated that armed drones will play an actual role in the drills for the first time and open fire on targets. He said that in the previous Efes drills, UAVs were deployed in imaging and surveillance roles.

Bayraktar said that the armed drones will open fire using Smart Micro Munition MAM-L.

MAM-L with Thermobaric Warhead

"MAM-L with it's tandem warhead, speed of fall and angle is a deadly weapon against main battle tanks protected by reactive or composite armor."

"In this sense, we also show the point where we have arrived in terms of armed drone technology. We are using armed drones in this important drill that has international participation from 21 different countries and we are actually firing. It is really important that we have come to this level," Bayraktar said.

Bayraktar noted that the TB2 armed drone served in Operation Olive Branch. He stressed that it is a great advantage to further develop the system, which is has been working successfully in very risky situations – such as landing and taking off in difficult weather conditions. He said that this helps the engineers make software and electronic updates for the changing conditions in the field, which in turn created a multiplier effect in the armed forces.

Up to 15 UAVs and armed drones currently serve in the Turkish military, Bayraktar said and added that this number will further increase in the coming period.

"In this sense, we should pay attention to network-based architectural technologies. It is important that the data obtained here are shared in different centers. At present Bayraktar TB2 is undertaking takeoff and landing missions at very different base points," Bayraktar continued.

"Accordingly, we have been working on both image transfer systems and the procurement of data from different elements. These include an optimized image transfer system running on mobile networks with end-to-end communication. This system was developed with a stakeholder company."

He said that this system works on a tablet with end-to-end encryption, meaning that the data flow cannot be intercepted. Bayraktar said it is secure, enabling soldiers in armored vehicles or infantry elements in the field to view the UAV images over mobile networks, even at low speeds, safely through tablets in their hands, not just at headquarters and operational centers.

"This solution has just been developed and will be available in a very short time," he added.

Bayraktar also gave information about the studies on the geographical analysis system developed by PiriReis Bilişim and is used in the armed forces.

Bayraktar stressed that three-dimensional virtual sphere was developed entirely by national facilities with all the software components and most basic building blocks were domestic.

Pointing out that compared to Google Earth, which is an equivalent product, it is a system that is already faster, more efficient, and already has thousands of users in armed forces, Bayraktar said it is also a network-based and server-client-driven system.

"We integrated this system into the UAVs. We have developed the UAV module of this system together. With this system, all of the functions of multiple UAV systems, such as task routes, tracking of targets, archiving, and geographic information system, have become feasible, especially in our current central command control sites," Bayraktar said. "This is a very important achievement. This system can also work with the tablet system we have developed. These are innovations we offer in the drill."

Bayraktar said that they have developed a wide area mapping and imaging system solution. Pointing to the importance of this solution, Bayraktar stated that they developed an original camera pod with series of electro-optic cameras and integrated this pod onto the Bayraktar TB2.

He added that original software algorithms that automatically combine thousands of high-resolution images captured in pod-mounted flight tests were created.

Explaining that the Bayraktar TB2 has flown over 47,500 hours so far, he said that they will deliver six units to the gendarmerie this month.

"We are aiming to deliver 30 more armed drone systems in 2018. We will make the deliveries to the gendarmerie, sea and land forces, respectively," he concluded.

TB2 has provided critical tactical support to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in the fight against terror during Operation Olive Branch in northern Syria against PKK and its armed affiliate, the People's Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria, enabling a swift and precise victory.

During the operation, armed and unarmed TB2s carried out 382 sorties during 4,916 hours of flight time and delivered 449 direct hits.

The Bayraktar TB2 armed drones, produced by Baykar Makina and operationally used since 2015, are the first and only armed UAV to be included in the TSK inventory. They have provided effective surveillance, reconnaissance and fire support to Turkish security forces in both Operation Euphrates Shield and Operation Olive Branch. Developed and produced nationally and originally with electronic, software, aerodynamic, design and sub-main systems, the Bayraktar TB2 is one of the world's most advanced UAV systems in its class with its state-of-the-art flight automation and performance features.

It boasts a record altitude of 8,239 meters (27,030 feet) for over 24 hours in the air; it can carry 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of cargo and can be operated day and night."

The project might complete in 2035-40...if Rolls Royce decide to help Turkey with full throttle.

If not, then we'd be lucky if we see a capable Turkish engine within our lifetimes lol.

Turkey has not built an engine for Altay yet, and the project is lagging behind just like many other crucial projects.

I know its hard to get out of the clutches of West and become a great military power...so my best of luck to Turkey. Atleast you have the leadership that is willing to give its best (hopefully!)
