Turkey successfully develops 'Ion Propulsion' for Satellites

    Development of HALE (Hall Effect Thruster) Ion Propulsion started in August of 2010 and completed last month (June) after 8 years of development.

    With 80 miliNewtons of thrust at 1300w, it is comparable to leading manufacturers of Ion Thrusters for space propulsion.
    Turkish Ion propulsion will be used on various Turkish satellites currently in development, such as TurkSat-6A.

    Well, not any more.. it has been in the real world for quite some time but I'm Turkey is among few countries to achieve this tech.

    Small-COM: Optimized Communication Satellites for GEO
    Small-COM is the telecommunication satellite platform, which is capable of accommodating a wide range of commercial payloads and missions; from TV broadcasting to multimedia applications, internet access and mobile or fixed services in a wide range of frequency bands. Small-COM's new, modular and flexible design, boosts global industry’s ability to play a significant role in commercial telecommunication satellites.

    The satellite is a small sized platform which would potentially employ various frequency bands such as; Ka, Ku, X, C, S, L, UHF or any other telecommunication payloads according to the necessities with encrypted satellite access.

    A finely optimized modular design approach was selected as a baseline in Small-COM Satellite solution to meet diversified customer requirements. The design of the satellite is based on previous experiences of TAI’s earth observation and telecommunication platforms.

    The activities to be carried out in first 3 months of presidency system is announced. According to projects, There are some special points regarding satellite launching systems.

    • Satellite Launch Vehicle(UFA) second phase signature ceremony
    • Signature for establishment production/test and launching base infrastructure for national Micro Satellite Launch Vehicle program having capability of launching micro satellites(max.100kg) to an altitude of 400km.
    UFA: “Şimşek” project 1.5t payload/700km altitude
    Micro UFA: 100kg payload/400km altitude

    HALE propulsion will be integrated into Turksat-6A communication satellite. Aselsan made 23 transponders onboard will serve around 15 years. 4,3t national satellite will be launched on space in 2020.

    Türksat-6A will be the main communication satellites that some transponders will be hosted to be used for only military purposes.

    National SatCom terminals of Anka-S and Akinci UCAV’s will be directly connected into 6A and will be operated at BLOS range.
