    Taliban:
Everyone know that those who fought in Soviet-Afghan war were trained in all tactics by CIA and ISI, funded by ME and WEST, so ISI knew all of their working mechanism ranging from Intel Collection, Fund Collection and Weapon manufacturing .But when TTP (Name was given by media to several un organized groups, but later they organized into one) rise there working mechanism was found very different from that which was taught by ISI to Taliban.

    Study of funding Network:
Those who fought during soviet times were using only one type of funding, they would mainly collect fund and weapons from donors which were Pakistanis, Arabs, Americans and some other western nations. After rise of Taliban their main source of funding was taxation on central Asian trade route.

TTP Funding: At start until 2008 TTP was funded by its foreign donors which are Afghanistan and India, India to larger extent provided them with tactics and funding, later after 2008 funding network was organized and more active.

Use of Masjid and Religious School Network:

TTP used Masjid and Religious School Network to collect funds peoples donated to Masjid and Religious schools all surplus funding was diverted to TTP.Many Masjid and Religious Schools were asked to contribute because this money would be given to Mujahidin’s in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Direct Donations: Before 2008 donations were collected from locals in wazirstan, kpk and rest of country provided them funds on religious basis, which were increasing day by day but after Swat operation funding dropped as locals of KPK and Waziristan suffered at hands of Sufi Muhammad and gang so they drew there support but rest of morons who never suffered because of them put all bombings on ISI,Mossad,CIA and blackwater. After donation funding was dropped TTP shifted on other resources on command of their masters..

How Masjid and Religious Schools and Direct Donations were collected is fairly a complicated Question but Answer is simple TTP used both ethnic and religious sentiments to collect funds, In Waziristan and KPK pashtuns were exploited on name of religion and ethnicity like your Muslims brother in Afghanistan are killed by Kufar, you should help, if they will not help then ask them they are killing pashtuns,if you are GHERATMAND Pushtun you will help and here peoples go mad and donated them money which never went into Afghanistan.

    Extortion:
A common way of raising fund is extoration, rich businessmen community of KPK was their first target, it was ANP rule law and order situation was already on bad shape at that time TTP stepped in at that time it used stranded way of extortion pay or bear damage, many people’s paid and many who first time relied on Government later paid. In second half of that operation TTP shifted its attention to coastal city of Karachi, already in worst condition due to democrazy extortion. it proved to be a huge jackpot but work in that region is somehow difficult because other Extortion Groups were not in mode to gave there bounties to TTP,clashes were normal in these clashes TTP suffered most of time but still they tried best to sustain themselves.

    Drug trafficking:
After ISAF invasion of Afghanistan drug dealers were given free hand to cultivate and produce drugs of all kinds, as we know Afghanistan is a land lock country drug shipments are required to take route through Pakistan to travel in other parts of world, with presence of Extortion network in Karachi and sympathizers in whole country several drug dealers contacted TTP, which later used TTP to ship drugs to Karachi and from there they were shipped to elsewhere.

    Arms smuggling:
TTP raise caused fall in price of all kind of small Arms, which TTP smuggled out of Afghanistan and later with help of Arm dealers to other parts of country.

    Organized crime activities:
TTP actively provided refuge to known government fugitives, which in return were required to share 40% of their revenue with TTP, crimes like car theft and goods smuggling were running in shadow of TTP.A gang was busted in federal Area, which was notorious for use of advance techniques to rob peoples their boss a already wanted fugitives was traced back to Waziristan. This particular gang even in one case robbed 50 million rupees worth black money, these gangs also provided Intel to TTP.

    Business Outlets:
Chemical importing firms, partnership in steel re rolling mill, Cargo Company used in NATO supply line. Offshore investments...

    Foreign Funding:
India still remains the main donor but later Arabs from ME joined them how Arabs helped TTP let’s watch...

    Sectarian Groups:
Sectarian Groups have strong ties with Arab Countries, these countries fund them and their religious schools, these Sectarian Groups and TTP share same ideology, in that case now these groups are part of TTP, and so Arabs are indirectly funding them.

    Sri-lankan Civil
During last stage of sri-lankan civil war Pakistan actively collaborated with Srilankan Army, ISI got a fair chance to study all the network of LTTE and tactics.

LTTE Funding: Contributions from the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora spread across Canada, United States, UK, France, Switzerland, Australia, Sweden, Finland, Norway and India constitute the major sources, Use of Temples, extortion, drug trafficking, Arms smuggling, and other organized crime activities to draw funds even used business outlets to collect funds. In start LLTE solely was running on funding by RAW but later RAW trained it to mange it own funding network. After analyzing TTP funding network in 2008 it was clear to all PA brass that India is actively supporting TTP because not only in funding but also in tactics because jackets used by TTP matched that of LLTE and many other tactics of both LTTE and TTP are same, deployment of Ambushes, IED’s, Mines and Explosive manufacturing techniques of TTP are copy of LTTE, if they are running on Afghan Taliban basis then these tactics would have been known those used in 1980 to 1990.

Lot of similarity has been found between working mechanism of LTTE and TTP,right from social tactics to military tactics this can not be called as coincidence rather an act of state sponsored terrorism.

The threat of terrorism continues to grow at a rapid rate in Pakistan. Terrorist organizations continue to push their terrorist agenda forward at any cost. The need of the hour is to combine our strength against our common enemies. We fully support the government of Pakistan in its fight against insurgency and wish to see peace prevail throughout the country.

I think US Congress needs to realize that as well.

On the surface looks like a well researched piece. I have many questions, but I’ll only ask one to begin.

Which Asian countries were trading through Afghanistan?

All the funds that Pakistan receives from the US are approved by the Congress, so I think they do realize.

@Rabzon Tajikistan to Iran, and also shia pilgrims from Central Asia who were poor but still religious peoples will use this route to go to Iran, permit issued for travel were also source of taxation..also Transit treaty between Afghanistan and Pakistan a massive network for smuggling developed. It had an estimated turnover of 2.5 billion dollars with the Taliban receiving between $100 and $130 million per year(Nojum, Neamatollah (2002). The Rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan: Mass Mobilization, Civil War and the Future of the Region. St Martin's Press. p. 178. )

Thanks for the reply. You did not provide any figures or source?

It is very hard for me to believe that Iran and Tajikistan were trading through Afghanistan, because both of them were very hostile to the Taliban and were actively supporting anti-Taliban, the Northern Alliance (NA) led by Ahmad Shah Massoud, who was ethnically a Tajik, and since Tajiks are Persians, they have a very close relationship with Iran. In fact, all the weapons to the NA from Iran and Russia were coming through Tajikistan. “Masud was given the use of the airport in Kuliab in Southern Tajikistan where he received Russian and Iranian supplies which he then flew into the Panjshir Valley.” Source: Taliban by Ahmad Rashid, page 61.

Doing a little research I found out that in 2010 Iran/Tajikistan total trade was less than hundred million dollars. Source:

mfa.tj | Relations of Tajikistan with Iran
In 2011 the volume of trade exchange between the two countries was 204 million U.S. dollars which is 102% more than in 2010.

Now just assuming for the sake of argument, let’s say they were trading through Afghanistan (which is highly unlikely) in the mid-90s, how much could their trade be at that time and how much would the Taliban’s earning from that could be? Since, you were claiming that “After rise of Taliban their main source of funding was taxation on central Asian trade route”.

You did not mention this before, but now you are saying that there were Shia pilgrims from Central Asia who were passing through Afghanistan and were issued travel permits. First, is there any source? I’m wondering why would these so-called Shia pilgrims want to go through the anti-Shia hostile Taliban territory, when they could have easily gone through Turkmenistan?

I agree with you on this one, the racket has been going for a very long time and the Pakistan government has lost hundreds of million dollar worth of revenues.

Though thank you for the source, but there is one problem, you took that information from the Wikipedia, now Wikipedia is not always a very reliable source.

I hope we can keep this debate/exchange of opinions civil.

Tajikistan also allowed IAF to build an airbase to counter Pakistan's so called strategic depth.
We have also seen, how this northern alliance cleansed Afghanistan of pashtoons and in last 10 years Iranis were imported to compensate for the sudden demographic change!
About iran... there are no two opinions about its hate towards Pakistan's army... and today's ANA is mutually populated by India, Iran & ANA.
Tattooed Uzbeks, found working as TTP, and vodka filled terrorist hideouts in Sawat is also a tale to tell.

Of course no sources are present for smuggling network statics but the same smuggling network was operating between central Asia and Iran too,you see criminals have no religion or ethnicity..

    @ قناص

    Thanks for your reply.

By the way, when you have time, read Taliban by Ahmad Rashid and Taliban The Unknown Enemy by James Fergusson. These are a must read for anyone that wants to understand the Talibans.

    Cheers.

I know one thing only Taliban are still and they will be,they are combination of Afhani blood with extreme jihadi motives which haven't existed before 1980 is history of Islam..And many journalists claim to have met senior Taliban leaders and Osama but they haven't...
