President Donald Trump ratcheted up the trade war rhetoric with China on Thursday evening, saying he was considering another $100 billion in tariffs on the country.

"In light of China's unfair retaliation, I have instructed the [United States Trade Representative] to consider whether $100 billion of additional tariffs would be appropriate," the president said in a statement.

Trade wars are not really fun, for any participant. Have in mind that this is still in the posturing phase though (the markets of course are traditionally reacting in advance).

    Taken from Politico:

None of the U.S. tariffs aimed at getting China to change its intellectual property practices have taken effect. The Trump administration has laid out a consultative process that will prevent duties on the initial $50 billion worth of products from being formally implemented until late May, at the earliest. Beijing has also indicated that the implementation date for its retaliation will depend on when the U.S. government moves forward.

Potential tariffs on the additional $100 billion in imports from China that could be targeted will also be subject to a similar public comment process, Lighthizer said Thursday.

The administration previously imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from a broad range of countries, including China. Beijing also announced this week that it would be retaliating against those duties with penalties on 128 U.S. products worth roughly $3 billion.

President Trump ordered his chief trade negotiator to consider imposing tariffs on an additional $100 billion of Chinese products Thursday, in a dramatic escalation of his trade war with China.

The threat from Trump is the latest volley between the White House and Beijing in an exchange of trade attacks that continue to broaden in scope and severity.

Trump’s latest move would impose tariffs on a significant share of imported Chinese goods that enter the United States — $505.6 billion last year.

yup- hope he pushes it through. but he is such a flake. Countries wealth is top notch, let's just do this and start America first movement. Secondly, we can recover, we can find a good amount of loss in revenues in China through India eventually. market size and great brand reputation for American products over there. Few more years and their middle-class incomes are rising to decent levels. On the other hand- China can't replace our consumer wealth and purchasing power.

Trump has a very pragmatic policy. You can not allow a dictatorial regime to grow rich with your own money and then use it against you. Trump is not so fool as his predecessors.

Ya about that. If the U.S is suddenly against China because they could eventually take the #2 spot on the global platform and doing everything in its power to stop that from happening. What makes you think they will allow India to succeed?

They are just useing India against China. While successfully destroying both. Meanwhile they will sit back and enjoy the show. It's called killing two birds with one stone.

    Trump's not in War???

Even Chinese people can only eat grass and soil, China will not give in to the US’s economic hegemony.

You picked the wrong guy, Trump.

Dumb as he may sound, Usa did screw up in the past.. They allowed the Chinese to be successful riding on the U.S back. Frankly, it's too little too late, nice attempt to try to recover tho.

Let's all enjoy the show. How this all backfires..

They will not, but if we could get some boost to the economy in the mean time to create jobs and boost industries, there is no harm in it.
