USS Mason (DDG-87) fires an SM-2 during a March 2016 exercise. US Navy

After being targeted by two missile launches off the coast of Yemen, the USS Mason, a guided missile destroyer, fired two missiles in defense.

The USS Mason fired missiles defending itself and the USS Ponce, an amphibious dock ship, after it detected inbound cruise missiles presumably fired from Houthi militants on shore in Yemen.

This follows an October 1 incident where a former US Navy ship, the United Arab Emirates' HSV Swift, sustained severe damages from a guided missile fired from Yemen. In the case of the HSV Swift, the Houthis claimed responsibility.

The Mason launched two Standard Missile-2s (SM-2s) and a Enhanced Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) to intercept the two inbound missiles, also deploying a Nulka-class anti-ship decoy, at around 7 pm local time, sources told USNI News.

While the Mason did fire defensive missiles and the incoming missiles didn't hit their target, it's not clear if the SM-2s did their job, or if the incoming missile, likely a 1990s vintage Chinese-made cruise missile supplied to Houthi militants by Iran, simply sputtered out and hit the water of its own accord.

The Pentagon confirmed to Business Insider that they were investigating the incident at sea, but would not confirm the firing of the SM-2 missiles.

Instead, the Pentagon only said that "defensive countermeasures" had been taken.

SM-2s, in service with the US Navy for more than 20 years, cost nearly $1 million each.

The message of peace can never be effectively conveyed while immersed in hypocrisy. As long as powers believe that they can serve their national interest by oppressing others peace will remain as elusive as ever. Peace comes with justice while silence of the graveyard is associated with hypocrisy and tyranny. Some call that silence peace and stability.

There's national interest and then there's Power Projections, these two have very different. Every nation has its own interests but not everyone is capable of projecting power.

This power projection coupled with religious extremists are digging Graves for millions.

well, firing sea-sparrow is understandable for me but why fire two SM-2, those missiles are not to be used against incoming missiles , they are designed for attacking ships and incoming planes not missiles ,that's the role of phalanx and sea-sparrow .

According to its web page, its intended against anti-ship missiles, but can also be used against ships in a pinch

Your post shows your lack of understanding. Assad Hassina are NOT extremist, they just don't want to let go of the power they have.

    Who is Sissy?

Modi is definitely not a extremist, he respects and follows his Hindu religion. Hinduism and Buddhism are two of most peaceful religions.

Any despot of your liking is not an extremist, what's so new about that? Those who are willing to commit any crime in order to cling to power are the worst kind of extremists and it's only natural that goons who prop up these extremists won't agree to it.

People were much much more happier in IRAQ, LIBYA, SYRIA under the rule of their respective leaders. Everyone from West called them extremist.

If people were so happy foreign powers wouldn't be able to manipulate the population of those states against those despotic regimes. It's just that they had no idea about the price they had to pay in order to oust those despots.
