    To meet the target of total elimination of poverty by 2020, China needs to lift 1 million people out of poverty every month, that's 20 people a minute... A daunting task. When you have one fifth of the humanity, seemingly very simple task becomes tremendously difficult.

    President Xi, a philosopher statesman.

    Indeed a big task that would make any government to throw the white towel and postpone the task for future generations, or simply pretend the poor and poverty do not exist.

    Too bad for China's politicians, China is not a democracy in the sense of the neoliberal west. China is a socialist meritocratic republic. So, heavy and unpopular tasks cannot be swipe under the carpet with the help of a complicit free-looking private media (e.g., India).
