    In French Guiana, illegal gold mining has been thriving for decades. Fuelled by clandestine workers from neighbouring Suriname and Brazil, this criminal enterprise has reached near-industrial proportions, destroying thousands of hectares of precious rainforest. But lately, the French armed forces have been cracking down on this illegal activity. FRANCE 24's Nicolas Pouillot reports on their efforts.

    The French army and Gendarmerie are playing a cat and mouse cat against very well organized and determined illegal "garimpeiros" gold panners from Brazil and Suriname in French Guyana's dense jungle that is very hard to access. (But very rich in natural ressources)

    Lately,more operations are being conducted which lead to an increase of destruction of illegal minning camps,the destruction and seizure of materials and the capture of "garimpeiros". Gun fights aren't rare.

    Have you cooperated in training/exchange info with Mexican and colombian counter-drug spec ops? They have much recent experience (esp on ground unit level) in such operations....often from worst case scenarios too (when they losing and have to cut losses or even turn the tide somehow)...that provide the great intensity experience that help overall strategically.

    The probably some of the best guys, if not the best in world now (current relevant experience wise) in these specific kind of jungle operations right now...with enough people on rotation in R&R so you can sufficiently engage in knowledge/training with them.

    Not with Mexico and Colombia,however there's a good cooperation with the Brazilian army,such as joint patrols/operations and controls at the border between our two countries. You also have French soldiers going to Brazil to learn from their experience and expertise in jungle warfare.

    @Nilgiri @Hamartia Antidote

    Two illegal gold panners 'garimpeiros' were killed on sunday and one captured after an exchange of fire with soldiers and gendarmes.

    A patrol composed of two gendarmes and 7 soldiers on a mission to fight against illegal gold panning near the town of Maripasoula came under automatic gunfire from the 'garimpeiros' and returned fire. Two 'garimpeiros' were killed while one was made prisonner. The others fled. No gendarme or soldiers were injured.

    It is sad that the rainforests are being destroyed by people trying to make a quick buck.
