    Visumpaya, one of the most well known and historic official residences of the Government of Sri Lanka, is to be soon converted into a boutique hotel, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said yesterday.

    Visumpaya, also known as... ...Acland House, was initially built as the Officer's Mess of the Ceylon Rifle Regiment. It was sold to the Colombo Commercial Company in the late nineteenth century. The Sirimavo Bandaranaike Government took over the building in 1971 under its nationalizing scheme, under the Business (Acquisition) Act No. 35 of 1971. It was used by the D. M. Jayaratne, 14th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka as his official residence and Anura Bandaranaike, the former Minister and Speaker of Parliament, passed away in that building.

    "This historic building is dilapidated and we need to renovate it in a manner which does not affect its historic value. It was proposed that the best way to do this was by converting it into a boutique hotel, which would cater to high end tourists and important visitors to the nation," Karunathilake said.

    Not really a super large building but a nice colonial era mansion

    The restarting the plan for relocating PM's and Presidents offices and residences to Kotte have been discussed recently but as they havent even started planning for new buildings it would take a lot of time.
    My favourite colonial era buildings in Colombo:smitten::smitten:

    Give us a bloody break, the current SL regime is unable to even keep the streets clean, their 'projects' have all been bogus.

    @Gibbs
    The GPO building can be used for a better hotel I think they can't because of security reasons.

    Before that they should built wide access roads to the Kotte area. The traffic there is out of control now.

    The credit should really go to the former regime and specifically the def sec and Urban dev sec Gotabaya Rajapaksa.. By ending the war he opened up once barricaded Colombo and then renovated and developed these heritage buildings

    He is the only person that did service to the tax payers of Colombo, Everyone else banked on vote banks to leave it as a slum,

    This govt cannot piggy back on that and get the credit after criticizing these developments when they were in the opposition

    Actually this projects are pretty recent. The Arcade independence and Dutch Hospital were from former.
    It easy to see the difference as they do it in different ways. The former does everything by it self while the current partner with the private sector
