'Sri Lanka, one of the best tourist destinations in the world'

    "Sri Lanka has achieved a number of development goals in three years after defeating terrorism which plagued the country for nearly three decades, Assistant Registrar of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science,Bangalore Dr. I. I.Shankargaouda said.

    'Sri Lanka's literacy rate has developed rapidly and there has been a great improvement in the higher education sector. The country's peaceful environment, cleanliness and beauty is something that everyone can appreciate, "he added.

    Dr.Shankargaouda was speaking to the "Daily News" while on a visit here to participate in the Samatasetha Foundation's annual scholarship awards ceremony.

    The Samatasetha Foundation is a Non Governmental Organization in Sri Lanka which works together with Lanka Care UK. It has been approved by Parliament and awards scholarships for needy students annually.

    "This is my first visit to Sri Lanka and I'm very happy and impressed from what I have seen. Sri Lanka has a sound education system and the people are nurtured and nourished by The Buddha's teachings. Sri Lankans are a very talented and polite lot which is most appreciable, "he said.


    "Sri Lanka's development process which is being implemented under the "Mahinda Chinthana" Future Vision programme is taking the country to new heights. President Mahinda Rajapaksa's vision has helped the country progress rapidly," he said.

    "The country's health sector had been also seen rapid development. People living in rural areas can avail of the best medical treatment,"he further added. Dr. Shankargaouda described Sri Lanka as one of the best tourist destinations in the world.

    Over US$ 2 billion worth investment projects under consideration in Sri Lanka tourism sector

    Aug 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Ministry of Economic Development has received applications tourism sector projects with investments worth over US$ 2 billion in the first seven months of this year, the deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Abeywardena said.

    The Ministry under a fast tracks clearance process has approved 129 projects involving the building of 9,364 hotel rooms this year.

    The deputy Minister said the Ministry has received 217 applications worth US$ 2.14 billion up to July 2012.

    The Minister said that to attract foreign investment for tourism the cabinet has approved leasing prime lands under a 99 years lease agreement to foreign investors for hotel projects. The prices of the leases will be determined by the Government Chief Valuer, he added.

    According to the Minister Sri Lanka will welcome over one million tourists this year.

    In the first seven months of 2012 Sri Lanka welcomed 543,205 tourists up by 16.7 percent from the same period of last year.

    During the first six months of 2012, revenue from tourism has risen 24.3 percent from the same period last year to $459.9 million.

    The earnings from tourism for 2012 were estimated at US$ 980 million up from US$838.9 million in 2011.

    Sri Lanka launched an ambitious five-year plan under the guidance of the Economic Development Minister to boost tourism in the country. Under the plan Sri Lanka expects to raise the number of arrivals to 2.5 million and to earn annual revenue of US$ 2.75 billion by 2016.
