Skyroot Aerospace becomes first Indian company to test-fire solid-fueled rocket engine

Written By: Sidharth MP | Edited By: Pushkar Tiwari | Updated: Dec 28, 2020, 16:19 PM IST

New Delhi: Indian Space startup, Skyroot Aerospace, has proven the crucial propulsion technology of their maiden rocket Vikram-1, with the latest test-firing of an engine. Vikram-1 rocket is powered by four engines - three solid-fuel stages and one Liquid-fuel stage that the firm has designed and developed.

In August this year, the company had tested its liquid-fueled engine and now has proven the technology of the solid-fueled engine (Kalam-5), by successfully test-firing a miniature version.

Solid motors or solid-fueled engines are high thrust, low-cost rocket engines with propellant in solid form. They are highly reliable as they have very few moving parts. The Engine Testing was done at a private test facility on December 22 in Nagpur owned by Solar Industries, which is India's largest explosives manufacturer and a leading Space and Defence contractor (also partner and investor in Skyroot).

Theoretically, this means that the company is close to realizing their dreams of putting together an orbital-class rocket, as its propulsion technology is the hardest to master.

A typical rocket consists of two or more stages, each of which would have its own engines(either single or packed in a cluster). Simply put, a rocket is a combination of multiple engines(stages) that are vertically stacked.

“This test demonstrates the capability of our technology for the Vikram-1 rocket. Though we have fired a scaled-down engine during this successful demonstration, it must be noted that building a smaller engine is also a complex process. This successful test firing gives us the confidence that the bigger models will succeed,” Pawan K Chandana, CEO, Skyroot Aerospace told Zee Media.

@Zapper Bellatrix and Agnikul seem to be far from Skyroot as they haven’t done anything yet. When will they test their rocket engines? Bellatrix has Deepika Padukone’s investment also so I don’t feel they will face any monetary issue.

Weren’t you the one who was aligned to the American bloc? We were the pioneers of Non-aligned movement with Egypt and Yugoslavia.

Plus anything we do doesn’t mean we take western help. Skyroot consists of Ex-ISRO Scientists who have started this firm. You also have China which will make you a superpower, you just need to start.

Vikram? Isnt the same name for the failed ill fated lander for lunar which flopped?
And look at how good they are becoming. Never take away credit from advancement in technology and science.
It hasn't even do anything meaningful and u can claim how good it become? Do not be hype by Indians.

Translation from Hindi: imported from Russia.
They are Ex-ISRO employees and it is a private space firm. They have tested it on their own and made it on their own. They already have years of experience in Rocket engines hence it is nothing new to see them testing their rocket engines. Plus who the hell tests an imported engine even if it is?

Trolling won’t make you any good 😌. It is a fact that despite being a Chinese ally you still haven’t achieved what our Private companies are achieving. You will obviously say that anything India does is of poor quality or western help. Sure West will help India grow in space domain where they want to maintain their own dominance only.

Vikram is the name of the father of Indian Space Program.
Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was his full name.

Can anyone explain why is the flame in the Raman engine test video becoming green in colour with each passing second.

And if west helps us then how did we achieve the feat of making the world’s best Remote Sensing Satellite CARTOSAT-3?

One of Cartosat-3’s cameras offers a ground resolution of 25 cm - this means it can pick up an object of a minimum of that size from a height of around 500 km.

Previously, WorldView-3, a satellite owned by US company Maxar, had the best ground resolution of 31 cm.

At the end our space industry is flourishing and you have a Lieutenant General as your SUPARCO chief instead of a Scientist. Thats why SUPARCO is busy making Ballistic Missiles.

Vikram-1 rocket is powered by four engines - three solid-fuel stages and one Liquid-fuel stage that the firm has designed and developed.
So, as per above news Skyroot has changed the configuration of Vikram-1 because according to this page from the company's website the Vikram-1 was supposed to be entirely solid-fueled.

Also, in my limited understanding of these things, Skyroot should have gone for a Liquid Hydrogen + Liquid Oxygen, or Liquid Methane + Liquid Oxygen engines because these can be obtained on other worlds. Skyroot would have gotten experience of beyond-Earth engine building right from the word go.

To be fair, ISRO scientists got initial and later training from the West, including France and USA. ISRO's first rocket was the Nike-Apache, an American sounding rocket.

Can anyone explain why is the flame in the Raman engine test video becoming green in colour with each passing second.
I will tag three people here. Maybe they will know.
