LAHORE: The city has been rocked by a scandal at a ‘top-notch’ school wherein teachers allegedly sexually harassed teenaged girls, leading to a public outcry and corroborations that the practice was long rampant.

The news of four male teachers allegedly harassing students and subsequently being shown the door by the private school has disturbed both parents and educationists about how unsafe even one of the most elite schools could be.

The Lahore Grammar School’s (LGS) 1A1 branch located in Ghalib Market has fired four teachers over allegations of sexual harassment and sending objectionable pictures and messages to at least eight female students. The students spoke up about these allegations on social media in detail. As the issue went public, more students from the school stepped forward sharing their experiences with the same teachers as well as students from other schools, showing how rampant harassment at schools was.

One of the accused teachers, A, whose screenshots of private pictures were also shared, used to teach debate and politics at the school. Reportedly, he had been sending such pictures and text messages to teenage girls for almost four years and was accused by students from almost every branch of the school.

Private institute sacks four teachers following harassment allegations by multiple girls

Meanwhile, the school – whose name has been mentioned in mainstream and social media – has not issued a public statement on the issue. Inside sources said the school management was troubled over the development and “trying its best” to reach a solid solution. “Teachers and directors of all the schools are deeply concerned over the revelations,” said the source. “However, what’s problematic is that the students also claimed that the administration turned a blind eye to their complaints.”

Much of the conversation took place on a page on social media platform, Instagram, about alumni of the branch in question. It has posted detailed accounts from students who faced the alleged harassment.

“He used to bite his lip whenever he talked to me, which made me uncomfortable,” said one girl.

Another complained that the teacher forced her to take a picture with him saying he would look at it right before going to sleep every night. Yet another girl claimed that when she tried to complain about him, he came to the class and while looking at her threatened that he would “fix anyone who tried to defame him”, including by deducting marks.

“The culture is to shame a person who complains,” said a source, N, who said it was not just about [this particular school], but every other school. “Cover-up is the usual reaction. But this is also because parents don’t want to take action. A mother, who said her daughter complained about the school security guard ogling at her, said she solved the problem by making her daughter wear abaya to school rather than complain,” she maintained.

On the other hand, in some cases, fellow students have been accused of sexual harassment as well. A teacher made a shocking revelation about a group of boys from elite schools. “A year or two ago, one of my students was gang-raped by these boys, and she eventually tried to kill herself,” the teacher claimed. “She has still not fully recovered.”

She further said she had heard that there was a gang of students, called Born to Kill, which harassed girls.

Nighat Dad of the Digital Rights Foundation corroborates such happenings.

“We have seen incidents of blackmail and sexual harassment coming from male students – and we have seen this across the board,” she says. “Even though this has happened before, during the lockdown, things took a turn for the worse. There was a massive wave of pages on Facebook and Instagram where pictures of girls would be uploaded to blackmail them.”

One thing was common, she said, that all these students were from private schools. “Most of them knew these girls would not reach out to their families and schools for help. And in exchange for removing the pictures, they would demand an [objectionable] picture of the girl or her friends.”

None of the suspected teachers or the school administration officials responded to Dawn’s messages or calls.

Students of the said school have also started an online petition against the teachers as well as “custodial staff”. A staff member from one of its branches said there was no harassment policy. “They define ‘inappropriate conduct’, but there is no set policy” despite government directives.

Pakistani actor Omair Rana, who is recently working in drama serial Pyar ke Sadqe has been accused of sexual assault by LGS students 1A1.

The Lahore Grammar School scandal has taken everyone’s attention on social media. Many female students have come forward who faced sexual harassment by different LGS 1A1 male teachers. The school administration has although fired those involved, but a new yet popular name among the harassers have emerged.

Among many other celebrities, Osman Khalid Butt also appreciated the girls who rose their voice against the harassment. A girl, in response to Butt’s tweet, wrote that,

“Sir, you missed a name: Omair Rana. He used to teach Drama at LGS 1A1. Many have come forward about their uncomfortable experiences with him too. Attaching screenshots below.”

Several students had also accused the actor’s wife Maira Omair Rana, who works at LGS’s admin office. A student admitted she used to do victim-blaming and scolding girls about their ‘revealing clothing’ whenever girls complained to her. “She also advised the victims that for their grievances they could not come to her.”

All the school did was dismiss those teachers , this is a criminal offence and they should have officially requested punjab govt to step in and charge , lodge FIR's against all involved pedophiles and those who didnt take action of criminal negligence. LGS is an elite school if this is happening there from a decade God knows whats going on in other places.

There was this other professor sending naked photos of himself to girls.
One of the most expensive private schools in the country. This is how they repay their students. Traumatizing them.

This is not possible without the cooperation of the girls...we dont know how it got leakedbut to throw complete blame on teachers is also not right...of course being teachers they should not have indulged in such activities as parents send their children to school by putting trust on teachers..they shouldnt break that trust...girls are teenagers...they dont have maturity...its the duty of the teachers to differentiate good from bad for them

Just looking at someone wrong (meaning with a lascivious intent) or being extra flirty does not amount to harassment, even in the US. It is borderline creepy behavior, but not harassment.

If you are showing cleavage (i'm sure you looked at the mirror before you left the house), what do you want men to do - look away?

Harassment is when you suggest uninvited communication at someone for personal gain, like 'Let's meet after work' or 'how about we discuss this over coffee'. This PC BS has gone way overboard.

Young girls of age (over 21) need to realize that men will flirt (even with those wearing Hijab), it is harmless/innocent as long as 'inappropriate' unwelcome approaches/overtures are not being made which makes the subject (women) uncomfortable.

Men will pursue women - that is a law of nature. As long as they do it with decency, restraint and tehjeeb, everyone is happy.

This guy Umair Rana should not have flirted with underage women anyway (if he did, that would be wrong, but all this is hearsay).

Given Umair's wife was involved with him at that school, I see no issues. She would be enough of a counterweight to any funny business.

The rest is just motivated propaganda to soil Umair's good name.

Something drastically needs to be done to cull this liberal onslaught against Pakistan's population.

Who are these teachers, why only fired? Give them death penalty.

This just strengthens the case for revisiting Islamic hudood punishments against rapists, molesters, and teasers.

not related to any female. Sure there are some scandals of young boys in Madrasas and religious schools, but it isn't to that extent usually portrayed on the media. And when such an incident is highlighted people usually gather around and try to cull that disgusting human being. Justice is usually served.

But liberalism by its very nature promotes these kind of incidents. So its quite common to see this in elite schools/colleges, if some one finds it hard to see teacher-student relationships, then male female physical relationships is still quite common and you also see homo-relationships as well.

Some people just need an axe to grind. They find it hard to just condemn ills of the society without blaming the "other side".

Sexual harassment is pretty rampant in South Asia as a whole, as some men of this region are sick in the head. They are the same ones who get all emotional about "honour", but go around harassing girls from other families.

On the other hand, the abuse that goes on in Madrassas consists mostly of pedophilia and child abuse. It would be wrong to blame any ideology for this. This is something in human behaviour that needs to be addressed, regardless of who's doing it, but until we talk about this issue openly and address it with the appropriate punishment, it will continue.

This is what happens when u adopt western culture in schools and unis. These private schools and unis adopt western culture, their clothing and their ideas, which then lead to such filth. If u dont control the environment, u cant control the filth and it grows.
I really get sad when i visit lahore and isb and see how people there have forgotten Islam and eastern values and everyone tries best to become a westerner.
