130 mm... I wonder if that has anything to do with Leopard 2 successor.

In the past, Leopard 2 as well as Abrams both have been fitted (experimentally) with 140mm guns.

Leopard 2 KWSIII : As the 1990s began, Rheinmetall began developing a 140 mm smoothbore cannon as a future tank cannon. It was planned to replace the Leopard 2 turret by a new turret fitted with a 140 mm NPzK tank gun, an autoloader and the IFIS battlefield management system. The ballistic protection at the hull was also to be improved. Originally a total requirement for 650 Leopard 2 tanks with KWS 3 was projected. It was never finalized. KWS III was not adopted then (cancelled 1995), but development continued on the 140 mm weapon system, with Rheinmetall coordinating with Royal Ordnance from the UK and GIAT from France. To test out the weapon's capabilities, the 140 mm NPzK gun was mounted and tested on an older Leopard 2 prototype (Below).

Swiss RUAG variant: Pz 87-140, an experimental variant of the Swiss Pz 87 with a 140 mm gun and additional armour (armor upgrade was later used on the newer production variants of Pz 87).

    ATAC 120/140mm a.k.a. CATTB (est. 1980)
CATTB – Experimental model with a 140 mm smoothbore gun, heavy armored turret and upgraded hull based on the M1's chassis. It had a mechanical loading system in turret bustle, a new engine and probably other upgrades, never fielded. The tank went into trials in 1987–1988. CATTB stands for Component Advanced Technology Test Bed.

So, why 'settle' for 'just' 130mm? (i.e. what did they learn from these programs to go with a 130mm rather than a 140mm?)

Rheinmetall unveiled the new 130mm/L51 weaponat Eurosatory 2016. The new weapon provides 50 percent improvement in performance, over the current 120 mm cannon. New ammunition designed for the cannon include high performance kinetic rounds – Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot – (APFSDS), and high explosive, air-bursting munitions (HE-ABM). Both are derived from existing types designed for the L44/55 120mm guns.
