Private sector to play key role in boosting BD-Pak trade: DCCI President

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) President Rizwan Rahman on Wednesday said private industries and businesses will play a pivotal role to grow the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

"In the new normal situation, businesses started to expand and Bangladeshi private sector is open for all, he added. In 2019-20 the bilateral trade volume of Bangladesh and Pakistan was USD 543.90 million," he said.

High Commissioner of Pakistan to Bangladesh Imran Ahmed Siddqui called on Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) President Rizwan Rahman at DCCI Office on Wednesday.

During the meeting, DCCI President emphasised on boosting regional trade and investment with active intervention of SAARC, said a press release.

Rizwan Rahman further said that the participation of Pakistani entrepreneurs in the recently ended 1st DCCI Business Conclave-2021 was encouraging.

"In order to make Pakistani entrepreneurs aware of Bangladeshi market, DCCI Business Institute (DBI) can arrange training courses," he proposed.

He also said that Pakistan may sign PTA or FTA with Bangladesh to increase trade volume.

He also requested the High Commissioner to take the initiative of reactivating MOUs signed between DCCI and different Chambers in Pakistan.

High Commissioner of Pakistan to Bangladesh Imran Ahmed Siddiqui said Bangladesh's positions in different indexes are good and Pakistan wants to enhance its bilateral trade with Bangladesh.

He noted that although there is a Joint Economic Commission (JEC) between Bangladesh and Pakistan its last meeting was held back in 2005.

The High Commissioner urged upon to activate this JEC for mutual benefits of both the countries.

Imran Ahmed Siddiqui also mentioned that Pakistan is interested to restart direct flight with Dhaka.

To boost bilateral trade, he also underscored the importance of direct shipment facility from Karachi to Chattogram port.

"Private sector of both countries can be benefited in the agriculture and blue economy sector," he added.

DCCI Senior Vice President N K A Mobin and Vice President Monowar Hossain were also present during the meeting.

In any case - private entrepreneurs are another breed. They don't typically engage in politics but may twist a few knobs here and there for their interests...

I am for FTA (no-holds-barred) between Bangladesh and Pakistan as an alternative to India Bangladesh trade which should be a win-win for both Bangladesh and Pakistan to avail of quality Pakistani products especially textiles and agri produce.

We need to do Pakistanis favors just like we have done for Indians trade-wise.

Will take a long time to match that of India's though.
