Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was in New York last week to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

As he embarked on his maiden trip to represent the country at the UNGA, the reports emerged that he would stay at The Plaza, New York.

One-night rent of a single room at the hotel costs around $900 (which roughly translates to Rs221,000).


This sparked a debate online about why the prime minister is wasting money by staying at a five-star hotel with his entourage especially at a time when Pakistan economy is under pressure and the country is ravaged by monster floods.

Now, Muhammad Abubakar Umer, PM Shehbaz’s focal person on digital media, has claimed that the prime minister paid for his own expenses during his stay in New York.

Talking about the prime minister’s decision to stay at The Plaza, Umer said that during the UNGA, it was the US secret service’s duty to ensure the security of the dignitaries visiting. The guests could only stay at the hotels for which the US secret service had given clearance.

Shehbaz Sharif, during his tenure as Punjab chief minister from 2008-2018, always paid for his own expenses during foreign visits, he claimed.

We are being told the country is going bankrupt on top of that third of the country has been hit by calamitous floods. But instead of austerity measures curtailing frivolous spending; this bhikari imposed PM is living it up at The Plaza with 70+ of his hawaris in tow. On top of this they resort to blatant lies that the money laundering PM who has a habit of asking cabbies for change back, is actually footing the bill out of his own pocket. If you really believe that, then I have a bridge to sell you.

Do us all a favor, go have your plate of khota biryani and slither back into the hole you sprung out of.

He as a PM stayed in a hotel where rental is $900 and paid from his own pocket. He went there to get debt relief and money. He met numbers of G8 leaders. It’s called diplomacy. You’re jealous coz he did things right unlike Khan remember when MBS called him back to NY to return his plane and off-loaded him like a trash. As a Pakistani sitting 7000 miles away from home, I felt angry & embarrassed.

We have tried Khan 10 years in KPK, 4 years in Federal and Punjab. He turned out to be worst among all. Even Altaf hussain can be more efficient then him. Do you even remember how Mustafa Kamal as a Mayor turned around Karachi development? I bet you can’t even name a hospital or University inaugurated and built during Khan 10 years rule in KPK.
