Photos of the Syria strike show missile interceptors firing blindly, failing to stop attack

Photos of the missile strike launched by the US, the UK, and France on targets in Syria on Friday night appear to show the Syrian defenses firing blindly in a wild and most likely failed attempt to intercept the missiles.

Before the strike — launched in response to what the US and its allies say was a chemical attack orchestrated by the Syrian government on Syrian civilians — Russia had threatened to shoot down US missiles heading for Syria and then attack the platforms that launched them. A retired Russian admiral elaborated on that threat, saying Russia would sink the USS Donald Cook with a torpedo if it fired on Syria.

Despite being in the area, the Cook didn't fire a shot — and it possibly served as a distraction while cruise missiles poured in from ships, submarines, and jets in an attack that the Pentagon says succeeded in that each hit.

But Russia and Syria begged to differ, saying missile defenses took out 71 of the 105 missiles fired.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed that Russian guns and missiles remained silent during the strike on Friday, according to the Fox News reporter Lucas Tomlinson.

Tomlinson added that Dunford said the only response was the Syrian military's firing surface-to-air missiles after the strike — to no effect.

The US maintains that Syria fired its missiles after the strike, possibly in an attempt to save face.

"Most of the launches occurred after our strike was over," US Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie, the Joint Staff director, said of Syria's interceptor fires. "When you shoot iron into the air without guidance, it has to come down somewhere."

Russia fields some of the world's best air defenses in Syria, but Syria itself has older platforms with limited capability. And an expert told Business Insider it looked like a big miss on Friday.

Take a look at this photo:

Notice the streaks of light coming from hills around Damascus, Syria's capital — these are most likely Syria's missile defense sites, which would be why the missiles appear to be taking off from Damascus, whereas the US and allies' missiles were rushing toward it.

In every picture of the interceptors, they appear to take a ballistic trajectory — or a smooth, arched path.

"The trajectory that I've seen from footage of reported Syrian SAMs don't match up with what I'd expect to see for intercept attempts against low-flying cruise missiles," Justin Bronk, an air-combat expert at the Royal United Services Institute, told Business Insider. "I don't believe the Russian/Syrian intercept claims."

In fact, the Syrian defenses appear to have fired blind. If the missiles had targets, they look to have failed to maneuver toward them.

Normally, an interceptor missile doesn't fly on a smooth arc and would instead whip around quickly to find and collide with the missiles. If the Syrian defenses fired after the US-led strike, it would make sense that they would have no target and fly uninterrupted.

"We fully expect a significant disinformation campaign over the coming days by those who have aligned themselves with the Assad regime," Secretary of Defense James Mattis told reporters after the strike.

Satellite imagery after the attack appeared to show the US had hit its three targets.

For comparison, look at how the US and allies' cruise missiles flew in a jagged pattern as they stalked their way to a target, and imagine how an interceptor would have had to maneuver in the air to catch one:

As I've said in other threads, SAMs that fly ballistic trajectories are NOT intercepts. You would see very fast maneuvering if they had a lock on those missiles.

    Not surprised.

Syrian (and Russian) are established liars by now and baseless propaganda is their only recourse for face-saving. They mistakenly assume that people will not figure out the truth eventually.

I have seen every clip and I get the impression that much of the action was over by the time people woke up and started recording events. We can see Syrian SAM wondering around aimlessly; some exploded in the air and some fell to the ground.

Russians should not be even boasting about anything. They are an utterly unreliable partner when it comes to shielding their allies from the acts of aggression by NATO and Israel.

To be honest, there is no shame in admitting inferiority and/or defeat in the face of overwhelming odds. However, Asian states have none in current times. This isn't to say that there aren't reasonable Syrians, Iranians and Russians out there.

There's way to many armchair generals on this forum. Am I some expert? No, but at least I can perform basic research.

Unless you told us we were told Russia is intercepting all missiles.
Tell me one thing, i see the fires from ground to air but i don't see any missiles flying in air or falling on ground?
To me all seems a drama from both sides.

I am a neutral observer in these matters (just a technology enthusiast); I attempted to convey certain ground realities to members here with my homework/analysis/knowledge but some are beyond salvation (their ego is too big).

Ample evidence in my thread: https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/damage-assessment-of-strikes-in-syria-by-nato-what-was-struck.553781/

You are such a pathetic liar and I've already disproved you many times regarding American control for only eastern Syrian airspace and your bullshit claim about NATO jets being spotted in As-Suwayda region. I've already explained to you that U.S airforce patrols YPG controlled Eastern Syria and Al-Tanf border post to protect its troops there.

For example you also say stupid shit like this:

"They couldn't shoot down a single Jet but they want us to believe that they took care of so many cruise missiles."

And you talk to me about lacking knowledge and pretending you even have a semblance of knowledge. If you had any idea of what your saying you'd know that the USAF used high altitude B-1B bombers with long range CM's (JASSM's) in addition with tomahawks to do the bombing. They will never be seen in any danger zone and can conduct their operation well in to safe territory, either being the Mediterranean, red sea or eastern ypg Syria.

    OR

"Let me guess - you 'monitored' the flight path of each Jet during the course of strikes with your magical instruments."

Ignoring the fact that I took information from Pentagon statements that only CM's were used around 107 in the strike and that coalition members would not be put in harms way.

Your nothing but full of shit and anti-Iranian/Syrian/and Russian. You pretend to have "knowledge" but its clear from your posts you have little. Don't pretend you are neutral observer. And then you also tell me to do my homework despite the fact its clear you don't know shit about the situation in Syria and even when I take direct quotes from the Pentagon you still talk utter garbage. You are by far the dumbest person on this site.

I have seen every clip and I am not convinced. Bear in mind that strikes came unannounced; nobody had a clue earlier. By the time people woke up and started filming, much of the action was over. Most of the clips demonstrate incidents after much of the action was over.

No missile was intercepted; Pentagon has monitored the entire situation live and have affirmed as much. In-fact, Pentagon disclosed the exact number of SAM unleashed by Syrian defenses and each failed.

    For example:-

    @500

    Will enlighten you further.

I provide you evidence of an intercept:

Please post it here. I might have missed it.

I am not in the habit of exchanging unpleasant remarks with jerks each time. Mind your tongue [or] face the consequences. An Iranian member didn't heed my advice and found out the hard way. You will follow suit, if you do not behave. You have been warned.

    ---

I have done my homework in regards to these strikes by now: https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/dama...o-what-was-struck.553781/page-4#post-10419544

I admit that I didn't find concrete evidence of coalition Jets intruding into Syrian airspace at the time of these strikes. However, certain actions are never disclosed to the public per my understanding [based on numerous accounts].

Conversely, I have observed that Israeli Jets have pounded Iranian and Syrian positions as far as in Damascus from time-to-time. If they can get away with these strikes, NATO is even a bigger threat and won't have much issue.

    FYI: http://aviationweek.com/defense/how-f-22-deconflicting-us-russia-operations-over-syria

    ---

Now, please show me concrete evidence of intercepts in question.

    @The SC

    Thanks for sharing it.

Again, we see a Syrian SAM going way up in the sky and exploding after a while. No sign of another object coming in its path and exploding alongside.

Million dollar question is that from where Syrians acquired missiles which could achieve hit-to-kill intercepts? Think about it.

Even in the case of Russian S-400 system, only 77N6 class missiles can achieve hit-to-kill intercepts and these are not mass-produced yet (and not exported to any country).

    From Pentagon:

Lieutenant General McKenzie said the Syrians attempted to shoot down incoming missiles with 40 surface-to-air missiles using a "ballistic trajectory" and "without guidance."

He added that those missiles “had to come down somewhere” and posed a danger to innocent bystanders.

Videos show just SAM launches and self destruct.

    Where are 71 missile wrecks?

Here is Tomahawk wreck intercepted by Yugoslavia in 1999:
